A Journey Through SAW

I would have liked to have seen more of them as three grumpy old men in the pub. I assume either they were on best behaviour and it was a bit boring, or they could only stand each other for five minutes.

Anyway, that was great. Much better than you would expect from a nostalgic Channel 5 music programme.
 
Well that was just fantastic although Jason is so utterly lacking in charisma. I mean a lot of his SAW songs were amazing but no thanks to HIM!

Obviously there are loads of SAW songs which will always be fucking amazing but I was reminded that the comparatively lesser hits Can’t Shake The Feeling and Listen To Your Heart are such great songs :disco:
 
Thoroughly enjoyed that, but throwing Big Fun under the bus didn’t seem very nice. Especially Pete banging on about making anyone off the street a pop star, especially as two of them had been in Ian Levine’s hi-nrg band Seventh Avenue.

Also a distinct lack of Reynolds Girls discussion, sadly.

Still, total highlights were Matt full stop (who just seemed ready to tell it like it WAS!) and OUR SIN trying desperately at the end to get them back together. “I’m in” indeed.

Nice to see Kylie’s new face in action too, but the ageless wonder for me was Gary Davies- how the fuck is he 65? I still would!

That interested me a lot. I presumed the vaults had long been MINED but the presence of quite a few demos and WIPs suggests there’s a lot more still out there. Would have been a good time to capitalise with a rarities album, I’d have thought.

Though you can’t imagine there’s any Kylie left, we KNOW there’s Bananarama stuff…
 
I assumed Lonnie Gordon ended up with unused Donna tracks for her album but seems not. I thought the Reynolds Girls would be covered as they are often cited as the straw that broke the camel’s back. Sinitta still desperate at 39.

They’ve always denied the Lonnie/ Donna thing- and definitely that Donna never recorded any of them. They were clearly influenced, though.
 
Also DYING that Mike thought Lonnie too old to be a pop star…

…when she was 25 at the time :D

Of course Kakko herself was squarely blamed for the flop by Pete, who said at the time that SHE COULDN’T SING THE SONG WE GAVE HER (:D)
 
That was clearly another Uncle Pete FIB since Kakko managed to sing an entire album's worth of tunes without each line sounding spliced together (unlike a certain fun loving trio).

I listened to about 10 episodes of this today.

What a TREAT. I love their sincerity and their obscure and somehow always insightful guests. Hazel is common as muck.

My only bugbear is them reading out the Wikipedia chart positions for almost every song.
 
I saw Sheila Ferguson on social media moaning about The Three Degrees not being mentioned and Mike Stock apologised saying he had spoken about her. Let’s be honest, there’s not a single person (apart from Sheila evidently) who would make a quick/any connection between her group and SAW.

This podcast is SO GREAT?

It was recommended to me on Spotify and obviously I dove in at the Reynolds Girls episode (surely their most listened to so far? :D) but now going through from the beginning.
I didn't live through SAW but obviously fascinated by the story as a pop fan - and I love how the hosts are perhaps a little removed from it all by the sheer geography of growing up in Australia when the internet didn't exist. It's a nice barrier that stops it turning into a fanboy pissing contest, and sometimes feels like they are learning stuff alongside the listener.

I wasn't expecting to find the early years all that interesting, but to my shock it really is?? I get them wanting to speed through some of the early singles to get to some of the bigger names for the sheer value of visibility and keeping listeners, but some of the stories of the obscure stuff I'm totally here for.

I'd actually love them to re-cut the Hazell Dean/Michael Prince interviews and story into one episode instead of split over two different ones. Both their interviews hardly seem to HOLD BACK, and the story itself is catnip for a pop fan.
 
I think if they'd known how much of a hit it was going to become, they could easily have slowed it down to one release per episode. They seem to be overflowing with juicy facts and the whole thing is just gloriously good. The guests they've found have been real SAW GOLD.

Isn't most of that what's in the much talked about, behind a paywall BONUS MATERIAL?

I am going to subscribe at some point, but I kind of want to wait until it's all there so I only have to pay for a shorter period of time :D

Oh good shout. I may or MAY NOT have used this strategy for certainly OnlyFans accounts in the past :angel:
