I was relatively quick off the mark entering because I was more worried this time around that we’d end up with someone else entering the same song

Also - the playlist of the original versions of each song was going to be a Friday night event, but I’m wondering if I’m not better served making it available straight away in case people aren’t familiar with any of the songs being covered.

The Friday playlist could then be a compilation of second choice songs (there have been a few :D).

Thoughts?

Aren't we meant to be judging on the entries though, rather than the songs that are being covered? It's a slightly different contest if it's being judged on both

I was thinking more of people being able to hear the original just in case there’s a mindset of not voting for something because they don’t know what it’s a cover of.

You’re right, mind. I don’t want people thinking they should be judging based on both versions.

I see what you mean! I think that's just a risk we've taken when submitting. On the other hand, I guess there's nothing stopping us going and looking up the originals anyway so my point is probably moot!

Probably best for me not to over-complicate things as well. I think the Friday night playlist could be the lesser known original versions of these songs alongside a couple of second choice songs people have sent (obviously as long as they aren’t saving them for future contests).

What do you reckon?

Shouldn't we just focus on the songs everyone has submitted and decide if we like them or not and later on (after voting is closed) listen to the original versions?
In my view, the premise of ASFM is to submit songs that perhaps would interest people in here and in this case the rule is for them to be covers (not necessarily covers of known songs).

Am I taking this too seriously? :basil:
 
I personally wouldn't reveal originally versions until, ideally, after voting closes, or at least until a little while after the contestants have performed.

I agree with this.

I do like the idea of an originals playlist but if it's not all songs people might complain of favouritism. It's a bit of work but I would certainly listen to one privately with all songs if you can be arsed to make one?

Do you think you have enough second choices to make an evening event playlist? (I can certainly send you SOME :D)

i think I agree with this, i think if we put the originals in the mix then it’s harder to judge the covers on their own merits

That’s why I was considering doing a mix of second choices and original versions. I can definitely do a purely originals playlist if that’s what people prefer?

No, that all makes sense. You can never take ASFM too seriously, it's basically kept us alive for the past six months.

Had another song slipped under my door yesterday, which leaves the number of outstanding entrants at a mere NINE.
Also had a few second choices sent through, which I can’t wait to unveil at the Friday night revue.

I wasn’t planning on it because the playlist will be after voting has closed, but I will speak to people to make sure they’re okay for me to use their songs. I don’t want to accidentally flash Moopy with something you were saving for a later contest.
 
I think second choices songs should be anonymous, as they could provide clues as to which song their actual submission is.
