Surprised Madonna was ever ahead, aren’t her streams generally quite weak for a star of her (former) stature?

Though I suppose when you have about 3 times as many hits behind you it all adds up.

Madonna has 724 tracks on Spotify, compared to their 172. But then her Spotify is all over the place, with non-combined versions, so the difference won't be quite that big.

I find it quite strange indeed that both The Winner Takes It All and Slipping Through My Fingers have had one third of their totals come in the last year alone.

Just did some quick maths and ABBA's top current top ten songs on Spotify have 7.046 billion total streams, compared to 5.426 billion for Madonna, and of hers 1.261 billion is just that The Weeknd song, which is far and away the biggest thing she's credited on.

So yes, ABBA's streams are clearly a fair bit more concentrated at the top end.

and why are we comparing Abba and Madonna so much? Because she sampled their song?

Don't forget there are multiple versions of the big Madonna singles, so if you haven't combined them, that would mean her top ten have more than that - and that her figures may be more concentrated at the top end than they appear, as well.

That they surpassed Madonna? Oh I see. the benchmark!

I've said before, for me Angeleyes is probably the quintessential Abba song. And perhaps the best example of the 'third voice'. How their voices swoop around each other is pretty much orgasmic.

It is sublime. Does it have big playlist support? It's a song I've encountered "in the wild" a few times in the last few years and I've always been pleasantly surprised to hear it.

Not particularly, I don't think. It has a minor viral moment in 2024 which elevated it a good few places in their overall chart.

I adore it mostly because it’s never been overplayed. Hearing it is still a joy- particularly in the wild…

I’ll never tire of this, mainly because of those A-HA-HA bits.. I was obsessed with Alcazar’s Burning for the same reason

AR: the Pop Pantheon podcast has put up their ABBA episode from 2022 back in the feed. I realize most of you know all of the info but if anyone like me that doesn’t know much beyond the music, it’s very informative. The guest is Carl Magnus Palm who I guess is a pretty knowledgeable ABBA historian.

Are the kids picking up on ABBA on their own Tik Tok terms or something? Or is just New Year?

The Winner Takes It All seemed to be driving it at the very end of last year from the Squid Game viral thing. Dancing Queen has been ticking along at the same level for a while (if anything very slightly lower, I imagine due to TWTIA being promoted to first place on their playlist), so nothing really to see there.

Then Gimme was huge as a result of the Spotify NYE playlist, but is settling back to its usual level now. Happy New Year also got a bump to just over a million streams on NYE.

Fernando has obviously recently had a Stranger Things boost albeit not as big as a few other tracks.

And Slipping Through My Fingers continues to grow for whatever reason, hitting a streaming high just before Christmas and staying up there since.

I would expect to see a fall when those NYE listeners fall out of the stats, but the general trend has very much been upwards even without it.

Thank You For The Music certified gold in the UK yesterday, and The Winner Takes It All double platinum.

I was nosing over their Spotify numbers earlier. DQ will hit 2 billion at some point this year I suspect. Winner, GGG and LAYLOM all likely to hit 1 billion before too long.
