Aidy Bryant Hello GIF by Saturday Night Live

It’s nice… the melody is nice, she sounds nice…

I get why it’s the lead single as it’s basically the whole story of her divorce in one song, but musically she’s basically on autopilot. Can’t imagine I’ll go back to it much and I really hope the album is a bit more interesting.

I really like it actually, but as a reliably sensible poll voter it's an 8 from me

I like how relaxed it sounds. She's obviously not gunning for another Hello-sized mega-smash, but she hasn't done a hard left turn either. It really sounds like she's just making music to please herself, which is probably the best thing she can do at this stage of her career.

I suspect it'll sound nice in the context of the album, but yes as a standalone single it's not got as much relistenability as I'd hoped

I reckon it's an accomplished 8 in the annals of power pop history, I mean it's still a BIG ADELE MOMENT, but I personally only really like it as a 6, so I'll give it a 7.

Yes this is what I got it terms of relaxed and understated and not trying for another Hello blaster, however, I got a lot from the actual track and music behind the vocals which is hideously catchy and more than just an understated track.

I also think there's connection in this song and the last song from 25 Sweetest Devotion in terms of the sound of parts of it and that this ALBAM is a narrative for her child.

8/10 so far.

It's not a single.

To be fair this was my first reaction, this could be an album track (a good one) from 25 but there's something behind the melody of this that makes it more than that, for me at the mo

I think this is it really. Certainly not a lead single. A comeback promo single would have been fine but I doubt she's putting out another single before the album, so hopefully she's got something very special lined up for Xmas week.

I don’t have a single clue what you do my darling, but I really hope it is music journalism as you sum it up so well here.

I misread this as "Adele - Easy on Me - the initial talk remix" and unnecessarily got my hopes up for a 90s swingbeat jam.

Anyway, the initial reaction is that it sounds like the background music which features during the sad parts on DIY SOS: The Big Build.

There is an unusually long and - it being Adele - fairy unnecessary gap between this and the album release. Do we think this is just a mission statement, and a more tantalising song will be released the week before the album?

That’s not a bad strategy really, sort of the ABBA approach of “well someone will want the other whichever we release, so have them both”

Five weeks is not that long at all by 2021 standards is it? I’d assume there’ll be a buzz/grat track of some description released a week or two prior though, yes.

Well I mean why does an artist like Adele need it? I think max buzz was attained when the said NEW ADELE ALBUM

I suppose the pre-order window is such a standard element packaged into an album campaign now. Obviously no reason she couldn’t have done a Beyoncé but that’s still really unusual.

25 had 4 weeks between Hello and its release so not that different (and When We Were Young came out a week before the album so I assume we can expect something similar).

she shot the videos for singles one and two virtually back to back so I imagine single two will come about a week before the album.

The idea of pre-ordering a digital album that will be available on all streaming services on release is hilarious to me.

“Omg I better pre-order in case they all sell out!!”

the "you can’t deny how hard I’ve tried/i changed who I was to put you both first" is sending me because i'm the type of girl who always falls in love with two men at the same time.

Except I think one of them is her son…

down from 19m to 13m plays in its second day. pretty good hold.

I prefer this to Hello and most of her output actually! EASY ON ME UP

I just find it a bit weird that there's zero progression at all in her music when she's arguably in the top 5 stars in the world. Perfectly pleasant, but world-beating?

it's just one single. maybe she's saving the metal banger for the alboom.

omg this rating style being used for the parts of one song. Iconic

I land on a 7, too. Perfectly pleasant and listenable but it's not reinventing the wheel and she's done stronger songs of a very similar ilk in the past. But fine for what it is.

I'd have gone for a 7 at first listen. Now (after three), I'll say 8.

I'm also on an 8. maybe 8.5 on a good day. it really grows as it goes along, the good intentions part is gorgeous.
