Pretty much, although it seems to still be performing a little better than it was before it happened. I don't think it registered that much outside of UK & Ireland though, so it was a relatively minor thing.
 
her streaming figures are becoming really impressive now. for a long time they were shocking.

what's interesting is that the biggest performers on spotify are her best loved 80s tracks, Vogue, Hung Up and 4 Minutes. her singles from 92-03 aren't really in the conversation...

like, Sorry has considerably more streams than Music or Ray of Light, and Jump has more than Don't Tell Me. that doesn't tally with general opinion of those songs. if we assume that her fanbase since the 80s/90s/00s is listening to her whole back catalogue ... that might suggest a lot of younger listeners have discovered Confessions and the 80s hits, which are presumably on lots of playlists, but not a lot of the in-between stuff?
 
It is quite confusing. I get Take a Bow was somewhat a local hit, and Erotica/Justify My Love don’t lend themselves that well to the GP casual audience but Music and Ray of Light are some of her signature hits and she routinely performs them and they are dwarfed by the likes of La Isla and Sorry etc. Very odd.
 
The only thing I can think of is it’s the 80s and 2005 onward hits that are getting the most playlist exposure and connecting most with the millennial and Gen Z audience who are likely the biggest streaming demo. Still her streams for even those smaller figures have come a long way from where they were a few years ago…
 
Ray of Light is constantly mentioned as an all-time favourite record by any musician who gets asked those questions, appears on critics' all-time lists, many Madonna fans' favourite album, seminal classic of the 90s... her best known album by a mile. it's definitely wild that the title track is that low. we need a TikTok moment.

I think Celebration is the default Madonna compilation unfortunately. Based on when, before they merged a lot of the stream counts, it was the versions on Celebration, usually the radio mixes or edits, that streamed much better than the TIC versions. Although that wouldn't really explain why her 90s singles are struggling because they're mostly all on Celebration.

hmmm but the streams of certain edits on TIC including Like a Prayer are very low so I'm not sure this is it. a lot of streaming services bury compilations and make them almost unfindable on an artist's page

Her #29 overall with just under 61m total, but in terms of yesterday it had just under 86k, which made it her #15 of the day.

So Madonna is starting to look healthy on Spotify now and closer to where she should be given her legacy. Her top tracks now (mostly combined, probably omitting a few million here and there from various live and remix versions):

Based on when we looked at this first time around, she's pretty much doubled her streaming in 3 years. Middle era tracks like Music and Ray Of Light still underperforming. Frozen the outlier because of the remixes.
 
I'm not sure she'd do it, but with her somewhat back on form and health given what she was like post Madame X-Pre Celebration, she'd do well to pad out this era with shows/a tour then get onto some kind of Celebration 2.

The King and Queen of Pop resume their royal residences together on the Billboard Hot 100, as Michael Jackson charts four classics sparked by the new hit biopic Michael, and Madonna returns with her new collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love.”

As Michael continues to rock with moviegoers following its April 24 premiere, Jackson’s “Billie Jean” bounds 38-17 on the Hot 100 (dated May 16), followed by three reentries of his: “Human Nature” (No. 29), “Beat It” (No. 32) and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” (No. 42). “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” hit No. 1 for seven and three weeks, respectively, in 1983; “Human Nature” reached No. 7 that year; and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” spent a week at No. 1 in 1979, becoming the second of his 13 solo leaders.

Streaming surges power Jackson’s moves, as the songs respectively drew 12.7 million chart-eligible U.S. streams (up 35%), 9.8 million (up 57%), 9.5 million (up 37%) and 8.5 million (up 35%) May 1-7, according to Luminate.

Madonna, meanwhile, returns to the Hot 100 at No. 74 with “Bring Your Love.” Released April 30, the duet debuts with 4.1 million streams, 6.6 million airplay audience impressions and 3,000 sold.

When did MJ and Madge last share spots on the Hot 100? More than 22 years ago. On the Jan. 3, 2004, chart, Madonna ranked at No. 83 with another high-profile team-up: “Me Against the Music,” with Britney Spears (the Princess of Pop). Jackson that week held the anchor spot, No. 100, with “One More Chance.”

Unsurprisingly, Jackson and Madonna boast a long legacy of appearing on the Hot 100 together, including in the chart’s upper reaches. They first doubled up on the Oct. 29, 1983, tally — when Madonna made her first appearance, as “Holiday” entered at No. 88. Jackson had two hits that week: “Say Say Say,” with Paul McCartney, at No. 11, and “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” at No. 23. The pair, thus, span 42 years, six months and two weeks of gracing the chart simultaneously.

For two months in 1985, Madonna and USA for Africa were both in the Hot 100’s top 10. For three of those frames, Madonna had two songs in the tier, joined by “We Are the World,” which Jackson cowrote and on which he famously took the spotlight vocally. For four of those weeks, Madonna’s “Crazy for You” and “We Are the World” claimed the top two, with the former bumping the latter from No. 1.

Plus, for two weeks in October 1987, the top of the Hot 100 was as regal as could be, as Jackson’s “Bad” was No. 1 and Madonna’s “Causing a Commotion” peaked at No. 2. As noted by Paul Grein in Billboard’s Chart Beat print column in the first of those weeks, Jackson tied Madonna for the most No. 1s of the ‘80s to that point, six each. By the end of the decade, Jackson won with nine No. 1s, while Madonna, Phil Collins and Whitney Houston shared second place with seven each.

Like A Prayer is looking VERY strong on Spotify now - 817m now and it's doing around 15m a month this year. Not bad for a near 40 year old song. With the new album coming out, it's likely to be her first solo 1BN song within a year.

The fact that even its chart performance is mirroring the OG Confessions by doing much better in Europe than the USA - ugh our album sequel queen. She knew what she was doing it by releasing it over 4th July weekend.
 
#44 on Spotify and now #19 on Apple Music is bloody fantastic. It’ll obviously sink quite quick but I’d say it’s a shoe in for both this and the Sabrina one to chart this week which is surely a great achievement in the streaming era.

Will depend how it holds up. Would probably place it in the early 20s based off the full day one, but I imagine it’ll be much lower by the end of the week.
 
for context btw Madame X opened with 4.5m streams. maybe CII will be Madonna's breakout album :disco:
