An absolute TRIUMPH in studio - the harmony leading out the final chorus has to be my favourite musical moment from this year's contest on record - albeit LESS SO in perf :basil: It gave me EQUUS!
 
I get what they’re going for and she’s definitely the strongest part of the package. However the tune is not rousing nor building enough to support the cinematography. Even worse is the camera angles being pure shit, when they zoom out to let the screen corners be shown it just looks like she’s posing in front of a giant LED TV (which, let’s face it, is more or less what her entire performance is about) :(

A very common problem for a LOT of the LED screen background performances this year, and really bad stage design.
 
Anyway three days in and I'm willing to declare this CHRISTIANITY'S SWEETEST FRUIT since CAROL - EVIGHET! :disco:
 
Not her best song but definitely her best performance (creepy horse moments aside). She sells it really well.
 
Oh good there’s a topic! Call me predictable but this is by far my favourite of the year - I think it complements, rather than copies, the sensibilities of Ashes to Ashes and, to a lesser extent, Kingdom Come. It will be disappointing if she doesn’t make it though AC.
 
It’s not like the LED screen performances are supposed to be like Måns or Sergey where they’re interacting with the backdrop. It’s just a part of the stage. What’s the alternative to showing the edges of the screen? Having every performance look like a music video?

It's fine to switch to doing closeups or filming the artists from the sides/back to show the audience or a change of scenery. The big issues are the zoom/pan-outs that ruins the LED illusions. Also there's a lot of cuts that're timed badly or filmed to far away.

Camera Angles/Timing
Liamoo is supposed to be controlling the light source with his hands. These are too zoomed out and the angles/timings are off.



This same concept was done much more effectively in Benjamin's Dance You Off:




Panning out to show edges of the screen
In Anna's number, the angles at 0.48--0.54, 1.04-1.07 and 1.14-1.16 etc ruins pretty decent illusions. There are ways around this. At 1.37 when the screen is mostly black behind her and they switch to focusing on the circling light below her the zoom out isn't as problematic. Also at 1.43-1.45 it looks fine when there´s light/fog on the ground to distract and the LED screen has a black background (the edges aren't seen).


These pan outs look even worse coupled with Cazzi'z colorful presentation. Her rainbow hand at 1.20 is off centre. 0.47-0.49 and 1.05-1.07 should've started closer so that the edges aren't shown during the zooms. 1.12-1.16 and 2.24-2.30 are much better ways to pan the audience and bring in lighting effects.



Compare it with Måns' 2015 performance.

It has a tighter production and makes better use of a much smaller screen. When the screen is not used for effects it turns black or blends in with the background. When filmed from the front during zoom out they've made sure Måns jumps as far forward as possible and while putting a light beam on him to distract from the screen edges being shown. He's then placed as close to the audience and far away from the LED as physically possible for the pan outs. They also use the filmed from the back/side with steadicam extensively to make the performance less static.

Yes but my point is in most cases they’re not meant to be “illusions” so Heroes is a stupid comparison.
 
Ofc it's part of the illusion. Or do you think horses are just Anna's answer to Lisa's emotive faces in I Don't Give A Fuck?

I'm pretty sure this has never been anywhere near as much of an issue before - it really has distinctively felt like you're being taken out of the moment when you see the edge of the screen a lot this year.

If they want to film the stage panned out without having the led screen distract then have it blend in with the rest of the stage and don't accentuate the edges. Also bring the artist forward closer to the audience as they did with Måns.
