Sorry but this album is iconic. I don't care if we make fun of her here but this was just such an amazing debut. The looks, the singles, the artwork.

Diva.

bonafide favourite. both such an evocative (Cold!) and relaxing album for me

even though it reminds of the henZ days :eyes:

I had it on only a few days ago and was thinking just the same.

'Money Can't Buy It' rap = 'American Life' inspiration

'Little Bird' video with the Annie drag queens recreating iconic looks way before other divas did the same thing.

Yes some of Stephen Lipsom's '90s-tastic production values on the mid/upper tempo numbers may sound a tad dated but with songwriting of that quality who even cares.

In many ways Diva was the solo debut to kill them all. A bit like George Michael's Faith. In many ways for Annie though the only way was down.

Let's rate:

11 Why
10 Walking on Broken Glass
10 Precious
08 Legend in my Living Room
09 Cold
09 Money Can't Buy It
10 Little Bird
08 Primitive
07 Stay by Me
09 The Gift

07 Keep Young & Beautiful

09 Step by Step

I don't think Medusa was her Listen Without Prejudice though, unfortunately.

Although I will always have fond memories of it, because I was fucked ragged to it for the Spring/Summer 95 season.

:disco:

Her version of 'Don't Let it Bring you Down' is so :disco:

This is the same boyfriend who tried sticking on a fucking CHRIS DE BURGH album one Sunday morning. I moved KM94 and Bedtime Stories in before I even took a toothbrush over.

The unplugged version of “Cold” might actually be her finest ever moment.

This is her finest album obviously and one of the best female solo albums of the 90s.

11 Why - hard to say but probably in my top ten songs of all time.
10 Walking on Broken Glass
09 Precious
08 Legend in my Living Room
10 Cold
07 Money Can't Buy It
10 Little Bird - the Olympics performance though :disco:
07 Primitive
09 Stay by Me
09 The Gift

Why almost certainly would be in my top ten of the 90s. That final 'you don't know what I feel' is fucking devastating.

This isn’t the original unplugged version but it’s almost as good. One of the best examples of a song that sounds better live. And one of the best banshee songs ever written

“dying is easy
it’s living that scares me
to death”

I mean...

I love this piano improv version. Every time she performs it live she doesn’t a slightly different take on it.

This whole concert is flawless from beginning to end. Those vocals: open air venue and no inner ear monitors :disco:

Walking On Broken Glass has to be one of the most underrated pop songs of the 90s. It feels very forgotten nowadays. Why less so, thankfully.

Walking On Broken Glass is such a wasted on red wine Friday night BOP!

Back at the time I remember almost RESENTING Walking On Broken Glass because I felt it stole Why's thunder.

Gloria's Everlasting Love video (first airing the back of '94) was such a Little Bird rip-off, to me it warrants no discussion. Estefan does not appear as she was pregnant, which is Annie 1 Glo O alone. If being off the mark has defined Cyndi Lauper's "career" since 1986, that she thinks it was her own Hey Now video that Mama Miami was inspired by, she might want to take a seat when she hears that Go Away was actually about her (it wasn't, but she does read her Facebook and I have access to the English language).

Spot on with the gone solo remark. She literally had nowhere left to go at this point. A dark road indeed.

(I hate Walking On Broken Glass - the opening piano sets my teeth off :zombie:)

That aside, this is an incredible record. I haven't been back to it for a while, but whenever I do, it's so worth it. The final Primitive – Stay By Me – The Gift trio is so utterly sublime (Keep Young & Beautiful can be ignored, obvs).

*poses in Venice in full showgirl get up* :disco:
*treats tourists with haughty disdain* :disco::disco:

HAVE MERCY!

Why - THIS is how I FEEL. Do you KNOW how I feel? I don't think you know how I feel!
10 Walking on Broken Glass
10 Precious - that middle 8, the rest is an undulating seabed of house music and domestic musing
07 Legend in my Living Room
08 Cold
08 Money Can't Buy It - she gets a bad rap now, but gets an 11/10 bad rap here
10 Little Bird - as alluded to earlier, this video is everything and crowns herself THE 80s video queen as I'm sorry but Madge was never so striking and berserk as Madamme Masochist. We too are unworthy :disco:
10 Primitive - oh the serenity, to go a bit Bush on you, the thrill and the hurting... will always be Annie's
10 Stay by Me
09 The Gift - now if this had burst into an early version of "you're really crazy" from No More I Love Having Hits :)

11 Why
06 Walking on Broken Glass
09 Precious
08 Legend in my Living Room
10 Cold
07 Money Can't Buy It
08 Little Bird - the Olympics performance though :disco:
10 Primitive
10 Stay by Me
10 The Gift

05 Keep Young And Beautiful
