Applause vs. Roar: reloaded

It's been almost one whole year since both of these pop behemoths were unleashed on an unsuspecting (and, in Gaga's case, unwilling) GP, which seems amazing really. Last time Roar came away with 36 votes, Applause with 31, resulting in a few Born Brave ID cards being swiftly revoked. But as of July 2014, which of the two is your cut of choice?

Oh, and Applause by far. Roar is the most fucking basic excuse for a 'max track' in years. Sorry love, anyone can string together every fucking cliché known to man and put it over a standard chord progression. Meanwhile, SUDDENLY the KUNST is GAGS :disco:
 
I don't love Applause but Basic is an understatement when it comes to Roar.

I mean seriously, did the lyricist have an ANEURYSM the night before the song was due? It's like that poem of all the clichés that Shakespeare invented and were actually really good at one point except INFINITELY SHITTER.
 
People need to get over the fact that Katy Perry is the MOR queen of this generation and so everything she does is calculated to BE basic. I still prefer Applause by a landslide though.

I really can't separate them. They're both so very maximal.
 
I'm not a fan of Katy Perry at all, but Roar is a fantastic pop song for what it is. Not all songs need 'artistic merit' to be enjoyable.
 
There's a difference between being MoR and just taking the fucking piss. Teenage Dream, Hot N Cold = great. 'Inspirational' self-help anthems consisting of dire clichés = not great.
 
I have nothing against Katy (except that her vocals sometimes ruin good songs like Unconditionally), I just don't like Roar.
 
The one that's about to have more views than Bad Romance on YouTube.

I still love Applause but Roar was such a grower.
 
How do the sales of Roar and Dark Horse compare? I think the latter would have been bigger had it been the lead single. And I find it slightly odd to hear Roar described as a grower. To me it's the absolute opposite of that. It's an earworm, absolutely; but it shoots its load the first time you hear it.
 
I rather disliked both at the time of their release, but whever I hear Applause nowadays I find myself loving it. Probably mostly for nostalgic reasons, last late summer was amazing.
 
I agree with Penny in that if you look at the lyrics for Roar they're laughable and cliché ridden. I get that the charts are going to be filled with silly sounding songs if you take the time to dissect each one but this really stretches it. That said, Roar is fun to sing/shout along with, Applause isn't beyond the chorus.

Now Dark Horse was a moment I could definitely get on board with. If nothing else, the old moo was TRYING. And it was really good in that it took inspiration from trap to make a great pop moment rather than just appropriating it wholesale or paying lip service like a dubstep middle eight.
 
Also the word "basic" should be added to the black list together with "YAAAAASSS".
 
I don't know. Basic has legitimate usage and it totally applies here - it's like with 'epic' where the word is needed but just totally misused by idiots. Like, Artpop was shit, but in no world could it have been described as basic - and yet it WAS by legions of sexually repressed teenagers taking their vernaculars wholesale from My First RuPaul :zombie:

As I've been saying for a year, Roar is great for when you're throwing a party for five year olds. I'm sure the cBeebies crowd think it's a total max track.

Meanwhile, for the more cultured queen who goes to an art gallery once a year, Applause continues to slay me.
 
I don't care at all that the lyrics for Roar are utterly cliche, it's just a song I would much rather listen to. That said Applause has been a massive grower, I would only have given it a 7 when it came out, but it's probably a 9 now.

I really can't stand Sara Bareilles' vocal on that song. She's obviously a better singer than KP, but her voice just goes through me on that one.

Strange. Her vocal is so inoffensive to me. I wouldn't have a clue if I heard her singing who it was.
 
Applause is ok.

Roar is the tits. I just love it when a popstar reads their job description and does what it entails.

Doesn't that also sum up "Applause" as well?

I found both to be pretty generic and not very exciting for the lead singles by the 2 biggest females in the world. "Roar" edges it for me by, firstly, knowing what it is and, secondly, not being trashy, faceless EDM.
 
Gaga is NOT one of the 2 biggest female popstars in the world. Not any more.

I'm a bit puzzled by the abudance of "X vs Katy Perry" threads on Moopy at the moment.

Are people that desperate to rationalise her success?
 
What? It's not like it's a Born This Way case of it literally being the same track note for note with updated production. It very obviously pays homage but it's absolutely not 'god, she's basically just singing over [x], so generic, snooze!' level.

It's the vocal styling and maybe the imagery where she takes influence. If anything that proves my point that generic really isn't the word for Applause?
 
If anything it reminds me of Madonna's Give Me All Your Luvin.

A true acclaimed work of art.
 
It sounds fuck all like David Bowie.

However, if you took out the stupid Koonz references it could have been by absolutely anybody releasing unimaginative EDM in 2013.
 
Like I said, her going for Bowie-esque vocal delivery and imagery is about as close as you could get to calling this a generic rip-off. The song itself isn't Bowie-esque.

It doesn't even have any of the basic elements of unimaginative EDM! Where's the relentlessly predictable double tracked beats leading into the chorus? Where's the instrumental-only chorus made up of tired euphoric synth stabs? Yeah, you might not like it but it isn't by any means unimaginative.
