AS5 E07: Stand-Up Smackdown

I suspect she just heard from the original source

I absolutely hate the last week of a drag race. It becomes so difficult to avoid spoilers at all costs.

If people think anyone but Shea is winning in a year where #BLACKLIVESMATTER is this big a thing on a programme where last year where they couldn't bear to give TRINITY the crown solo because she was white, WELL...

Does James even GO by the name Tyra anymore? I thought he'd retired her, and asked people not to use that name or 'she' to address him anymore. But then he's done this before so I don't blame people.

He has (or at least had) the James instagram account, but then also started (or resurrected, I don't know) a King Tyra one as well.

I heard he would comment on his boy account from the Tyra account with stuff like “you thought I would go away” and such.

Wasn't this done last year though, not that I disagree Shea will win obviously.

Hang on wait, don't tell me the filming of three crownings was done last year and then they pick the winner nearer the air time, and just paste on the winner's crowning moment at the end? Is that how it works?!

Yes! :D

The top three never know who's won until it airs/is leaked

Yes, there’s a clip of Trinity completely confused when they showed bother her crowning and Monet’s in what was one of the show’s worst edit jobs ever, and God knows there has been a FEW :D

OMG :agog:

Well I'm not remotely surprised I never knew this, but that just seems such a horribly false way of doing things! So RuPaul doesn't decide during filming who is the winner but instead gets months to mull it over and see how they're perceived before deciding anything then.

Although I suppose that's no different to the regular series, but at least in the regular one the final is REAL ffs :D (isn't it?!)

No, it isn't in the regular seasons either. That's why you see the backstage reaction videos. The reaction of the winner you see on stage is entirely fake.

All fake :D

I didn't realise it was the same for All Stars.

Clearly I'd written the Trinity/Monet fiasco out of memory, because that couldn't be anything else.

I mean to be fair I never even considered it, so had no reason to think otherwise. I just don't get WHY :D to hide the winner yes, but can't they film the final nearer the time it airs?! Is it logistically that hard?

I now need to rewatch every single final ever to cross examine this no doubt entirely obvious tomfoolery

Well they do with the regular series. The finale is filmed a week or two before it airs, but they still do the multiple crownings so word doesn’t get out.

For All Stars it’s a year or so in advance

This last page and RoM discovery that drag race is fake is very :D

they did it after season 5, I think, because Perez Hilton leaked the result of season 4 before even the first episode had aired, which caused a lot of bad blood.

you know what gays are like, as soon as they know a spoiler!

I avoided @dUb s final thread because of the title (how were we supposed to know it was a joke :zombie: I wasn’t going to click it to find out)

The last real finale reaction was season 3 (which is the one Perez leaked). Everything after is multiple reactions filmed.

I thought it might have been 3, but I thought it was weird, they didn’t have a theatre finale did they?

It is a bit like finding out that Santa Claus isn't real when you realise the endings are faked. It's so depressing.

In fairness it is a way to safeguard situations like Sherry Pie - imagine if this was all filmed at the time then just aired and Sherry had been the winner.

I realise I've denied you all the usual longread (especially @Iguana ) - guess it feels a bit like old news now.

But it was an alright episode, and things went largely as I had expected, thought it didn't need Mystic Meg to see the writing on the wall for Blair.

Blair - I liked her, she seemed sweet, but much like Mayhem she's not an actress. Mayhem came into it as the nice one who's always sweet except when she's the Queen of drama but except for when she's backtracking and rewriting. Blair felt like a Drag Race/Reality TV cliche bingo game in action. One pet peeve of mine is that people assert that they should get something because they really want it (no, REALLY want it), and she's go so much more to show. WHEN?! Why hasn't she done it yet in the penultimate episode?! And don't the others really want it too? She just comes across as a nice kid but definitely trotting out the lines so nobody feels a certain way about anything, which is so dull.

Cracker - definitely slayed that challenge, and as much of an awful choice the lip sync was, she earned that win. Her comedy set was effortless and she didn't psych herself out. Surprised that she made it to 3 wins, but I can't dispute this week's one. I liked her runway, especially the bonkers plague doctor, but the Lady Death thing was a bit misshapen. Happy to see her flourishing in this season to put S10 behind her.

Shea - That buildup with the gas etc was such a storyline device  ... does she think we forgot her S9 Roast that was so good? (I guess Blair did when she nicked jokes off it). The runway was sort of predictably good, I feel like it could have been wheeled out for a bunch of categories TBH. A safe top 3.

Jujubee - I hate to say I was kind of disappointed, I thought she was be amazing in the standup. She did land the jokes in the end, but it didn't do much for me. She won the runway though, for sure, FINALLY.

I don't really know what can surprise me now - Shea's almost certainly going to win, I'd LOVE Jujubee to win but I can't see it, or a double win. Cracker, well I like her and she has brought it enough to deserve top 3 against my expectations of her going out in 8th or something, but good luck to WoW if they decide that's the hill they're going to die on :D

I think I'll have to agree with Willam about the fingerprints of production being all over this, to the point of being a bit insulting.

Honestly speaking I wonder if Juju's set bombed more than shown, and Blair's wasn't that bad - she DEFINITELY got the booger edit.

As for 'storylines' (:manson:) I feel like Shea's the only one who has really gotten one out of the top 3, i.e. the protagonist storyline. That's why it's been a bit more of a challenge to root for her, she's not quite delivered as much as her hype, and it has felt more or less decided that she was going to win. Which is a shame because I think she IS deserving of it, but it's hardly a nailbiter like AS2 where the final winner was POSSIBLY in dispute.

Juju has had little glimpses of story, about her private life, but basically nothing about her Drag Race journey and being a finalist twice - I find that so weird when the Shea story has been what an AFFRONT it was not to win her season. And Cracker, she didn't really have much of a story at all!

Oh and one more thing - So glad the "Shiver & Shh" thing with Blair wasn't told to her in S10 (did anyone else even think about it before?!), because she'd have been running that meme into the ground, and it wouldn't have been Brown Cow Stunning!

Here's how the popularity is looking going by RTs and likes the official Drag Race social accounts

Twitter
15.7k Shea
8.8k Jujubee
4k Miz Cracker

Instagram
114k Shea
98.7k Jujubee
63.7k Miz Cracker

Weirdly on the UK Drag Race Fans Twitter the following numbers of retweets and likes:

Cracker 44 total
Jujubee 541 total
Shea 53 total

Do we just like Jujubee more in the UK? I know it's a small sample but that different is ridiculous...
