If the contestant qualifies, they’ll be given a chance to change their entrant. I think because the task was to select a Moopy Icon, it was inevitable that some relics from the past might come up; they’re not necessarily an endorsement. This will be the place that Faloola Chong dies, but I don’t think there was a racist intention behind it.

That’s bullshit, someone should have had the realization that it’s a racist joke and changed it. It’s 2021.

Yep - I think if a POC poster finds it offensive then it should be changed now, regardless of whether or not people found it funny back in 2005.
 
The poster has been contacted about changing it. I will say they stuck to the brief for picking a Moopy icon and we had no idea there’s be this depth of feeling about it, especially not when Carola has been called a fucking ugly old cunt in three different contests without an eyebrow being raised :D

Not to speak for anyone else, but I didn’t think you or Suomi (or the poster who sent it) has racist intentions. Just that it did offend someone and the right thing to do is to change it

I AGREE WITH YOU, but some perspective here: it takes quite a lot of time to organise one of these things, we’re doing it in our free time, and chasing 40 people for YouTube links, Spotify links, pictures etc takes a lot of time, as well as making the videos etc. Buttertart had already contacted the poster to deal with it a week ago, but rather than make it into a huge racist incident, we thought we’d just run the heat as normal and let the poster change it quietly, as what they’ve done is misfired with an attempt at humour

It shouldn’t be changed because it’s offensive to me. It should be changed because it’s a racist joke from the past where we could claim to not have known better, what’s our excuse now?

I’ll try not to get too involved in this; but why does the offended person have to be a POC?
Like Phoenix said it shouldn’t be removed because *he* finds it offensive but because it’s racist.

(I personally think she should stay because she’s just another problematic Moopy icon)

I think Soldi was just alluding to conversations we had last year as a forum.

One thing I will say (not aimed at you @RaspberrySwirl, you’re just the poor sod whose comment I’m replying to) is that I’m not here for the poster behind the avatar being pilloried for picking a Moopy icon in a contest where the brief was to pick a Moopy icon. We’ll get it changed, absolutely, and no more will be heard from Faloola ever again, but where there was no harm intended I hope none is inferred.
 
The brief did say "ICONS DE MOOP; celebrities or characters we once loved, currently love or you believe we should love"

It could even be interpreted as a comment on how far we've come. :)

So I decided to have a look back and try to discover the origins of Faloola Chong and how embedded it was in the Moopyverse, and I didn’t have travel very far back in time to discover that one of the main proponents of the joke was, in fact, you.

Well, you called me out for using d*ke (I didn't even know it was a bad word), I did a search here and it happens you've been happily using it several times, a few years earlier. So he's not the only one that changes his point of view on things like this, mon ami.

Reading the Faloola Chong drama, call me naive but I never knew it was a racist character. I say this because I included not that long ago a Faloola cameo in one of my stupid videos, just because she seemed to be a Moopy icon, and I'm horrified anyone thinks I was making a racist joke. I thought she was real, I remember Diddy telling me she wasn't. I see her like Manuel from Faulty Towers, is that a racist character too? A foreing than can barely speak the language which makes him very funny. Or not funny at all, but I don't see a bad intention. When we tell jokes about Britons we put a terrible accent and pretend we're very drunk, it's a stereotype but in good spirit. Never mind, sorry if anyone felt offended for that Faloola video, I never thought someone perceived her like a racist character. :shy: x

Agreed! We can all grow and learn from the words we have used in the past. Particularly when we’ve used words to try and be funny/get a reaction.

I think that’s what our original point here was, that something used as often as Faloola Chong was bound to enter the Moopy psych when asked to list icons, so it was more about not having the person who decided to enter that be vilified, because ultimately this is just meant to be a fun little online contest.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be in Enya’s basement.
