Associates - Party Fears Two

With the forthcoming 3CD (blue vinyl @Suedey) deluxe 40th anniversary edition of the album Sulk due next month, I've been revisiting Associates and this glorious single. I wouldn't say it was unappreciated by people who know it, but it thankfully is perhaps a little too arty to appear too high on any 80s playlist. The keyboard riff is exquisite. And Billy Mackenzie was just beautiful.

A magnificent song. I got switched onto the Associates when the 2CD reissues came out (about 10 years ago?) - nabbed them all at once, giving me a kind-of ersatz six disc box-set for £30. Excellent purchase.

I remember this being on the radio all the time when it was in the charts, to the point where I remember being surprised that it hadn't reached a higher peak when the TOTP repeats came around; my memory assumed it must have been a top 3.

I remember Club Country more at the time, as much as this was the bigger hit, and quite rightly better remembered.

Only slightly ashamed to say the thing I most appreciated them for at the time was the cover for 18 Carat Love Affair though. Although at the time I was far too clueless to even try and have a wank over it. I was just strangely drawn to it...
