Very sad, but she was apparently deep in the throes of dementia and had been for some time.
Also 83 isn't a bad run at all. I was always mildly surprised how old she actually was, given like many I first got to know her from THIS.

It kind of never really mattered if she did much between Carry On and EastEnders, I guess, because those films were such a TV staple throughout the 70s and 80s. And thanks to her private life she was very much a tabloid feature all the time. She was a huge pop culture figure.
