Belinda Carlisle - Once Upon a Time in California

I really don't understand how she could look at that and be pleased with it.

Surely she would be better in picking just one song and pooling the video budget so she has a visual for promo purposes. Or just not bother at all.

I mean I’m fine with a video shot on the cheap but at least go in the backyard and get some pretty morning or evening light and do a little magic with the iPhone

Give her a break. She said in Classic Pop she’s been working on this record tirelessly since 2017. She must be exhausted. She also said she’s going to do her 5 date UK tour and probably take next year off.
How KateBushian of her

I just don’t understand it when it was only two years ago that she released a really good set of brand new songs and had the most attention she’s had in forever. I hoped that would spark a creative renaissance but SEEMINGLY NOT.

Her version of One is fantastic but what’s with the abrupt fade out ?

I agree that One is the best of the bunch so far, even if the fade sounds like amateur hour.

She strikes again with the video though:

Also the powers that be at Radio 2 feeling benevolent this week and adding Get Together to the b list.

Drawing some headlines today for calling out noted lascivious sexpot… Dua Lipa?

She’s frustrated by how little has changed. “These days young women in the music industry are just so sexualised. Like, what happened? I don’t get it.” Maybe it’s more of a choice for some artists these days? They see it as empowering? “It’s not empowering. It’s embarrassing,” Carlisle argues. “Yes, you will get attention, but not the right kind, and down the line you are going to look back and say: ‘Wish I hadn’t done that.’ I mean: Dua Lipa? It’s shocking! She’s so talented. She doesn’t need to do that.”

Yeah Dua Lipa wasn’t my instant go to when I thought POP STRUMPET :D

Dua Lipa public image feels more aimed at the female gaze than many of her contemporaries. Like, yes, she's always in a bikini, but that's because she's always living it up in the tropics with a hefty holiday read in her Versace handbag. She's basically the arch-influencer.

Well, I hope Belinda had a lovely time walking down memory lane while recording this, but having given it a cursory spin I can’t begin to imagine an occasion wherein I’d ever feel compelled to play it again. :(

Same!

At least she’s gotten everyone off her back about delivering a “new pop album” for a long while.

Well done on feeling compelled to play it in the first place. I've no intention on investigating it.

Honestly, the way she’s monkey pawed us for the last twenty years!

“Oh you want a new album? Here’s one in FRENCH!”
“A new album you say? Here’s one in CHANTING!”
“Here’s a new pop…..EP!”
“Guys don’t worry, here’s the new album you wanted. A COVERS ALBUM!”

Trolldonna wishes!

Swapping career tips on LAZINESS no doubt!

I played Never My Love and Time in a Bottle and they are both pleasant enough but it is hard to muster up much excitement for this.

I have the signed CD on the way from Amazon :D

She made it to #46 in Australia but this is the very first week of a huge ARIA chart overhaul that removes any song or album more than 2 years old and puts them in a recurrent chart instead. Our album chart in particular was almost completely full of old stuff so if she had released just a week earlier I imagine she might have been somewhere in the 200s or beyond

She'd be top 30 in the UK if albums over 2 years old were excluded and put into a another chart.

I guess realistically it doesn't make much difference to an act like Belinda who has a legacy, but there are new acts who would otherwise be getting top 10 or 20 albums who probably get written off as flops and underachieving. They simply can't compete with catalogue streaming.

Anyway, she's #7 on sales only, whatever importance you may attach to that.

Does this Mean that Madonia is will do bettah because of catalogue streams or are unmerged streams the new stocking issues!?!!

Not a single track from the new record on the above setlist, probably wisely.

Enjoyed the couple of songs the highlights show played on BBC2 last night. Highlights show on again tonight for LOUISE and ANASTACIA fans :disco:

Big, Big Love though... maybe she does have some idea about what she should be doing.

I enjoyed the set and thought Big Scary Animal was especially good. Some timing issues in the first couple of songs and the crowd were hard fucking work though.

I mean to be fair at least she’s still sharting and has a fan base when you consider that her commercial heyday was actually pretty brief in relative terms and is now nearly 40 years ago
Can’t say the same about many of her contemporaries eg Paula Abdul etc

I suspect Belinda can sell out a night or two at the O2 if she had all the bells and whistles of a proper GH gig but I think she can’t be bothered
