Beyoncé - act i: RENAISSANCE (1 Viewer)

Cuff It and Virgo's Groove are pretty good, as are the last 3, and I may have performed a suedey u-turn already on Pure / Honey.

it's just a weirdly nothingy album though. no through line or particular theme, nor an especially distinct sound. it's all a bit "quick follow up to a smash album"... except Lemonade was six years ago.

I think the objective was right - let’s hit with some commercial newness after my art era - but the delivery doesn’t seem to have met the expectation

(Why am I still commenting when I haven’t listened to it fully yet FFS)

Honey Dijon :disco:
I was just looking at the album credits on Wikipedia. :disco:

I don't think there was any intention of this being a commercial era. Break My Soul is a complete anomaly on this album. The rest is formless, shapeless vibing.

I was just finishing the album and it segued into Lizzo's 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready); and it hit home just how un-commercial and weird the album is.

Thank the Maker it isn't just me that thinks it is dull. I was about to reappraise my Tanita Tikaram albums as "joyous soundtracks to a hot girl summer."

I suppose I admire this more than actively enjoy it. Have had two listens and I like bits here and there and it’s all very cool and fierce etc but it’s not something I’d seek out I don’t think

And [VoR]I can’t him a single thing from it[/VoR] beyond the single!

I don't know if it's just the weed but I really like most of this. To me, Beyonce is at her BEST when she just LETS GO instead of trying to be deliberately 'iconic'. Her lyrics really make no sense :D

Church Girl is absolute lunacy lol 10/10

And FUCK Pure/Honey is good.

I'm sorry but PURE/HONEY is just flat out homosexual cultural appropriation

Listening now. "CUFF IT" seems like it could be a hit, and I actually like the incorporation of "I'm Too Sexy" in "ALIEN SUPERSTAR". But the album does seem to lack focus so far. And I find her voice SO BORING.

how do you go from BEYONCÉ, to Lemonade, to this hot ass tuneless mess?

77

(pls ignore this post when i come back and give it a 95 in three weeks)

So I guess I'm the only one who thinks this album is fantastic. Well, until @Jark and @Suedey have their Damascene conversions.
Too early for me yet.

I wasn't exactly expecting twelve versions Break My Soul, but I thought it might be more immediate than it is. But that's fine, the more recent albums have all taken time to bed in.

I don’t think I can be bothered to listen to it considering the reaction it’s had here :D

It's definitely not a bad album. I like most of it.

The literal gay and drag references are still really stark though. Flat out appropriation.
