Beyoncé - act ii: COWBOY CARTER

Sorry, but I played through to Jolene the other day and was bored too. I gave up.

These “Act” albums seem more about pretention than tunes to me so far.

I think actively hating Texas Hold ‘Em due to it being fucking everywhere hasn’t helped.
To be fair it's 20+ full length songs, how can you listen to... 5 or 6 and then make a judgment about the album? this one barely gets going until after Jolene. if you're too lazy to listen and invest the time that's one thing but don't come out and say there are no tunes when you can't be fucked sticking with it.

I'll protect you in the moshpit never fails to take me OUT. bitch please!!!

Or how about you don’t wank about with TWENTY FULL LENGTH SONGS and think it’s acceptable to hold my attention span enough to continue listening, especially if it “barely gets going until a third of the way through.

The worst thing about the 90s cd revolution was that it produced bloated, indulgent albums full of shite. There’s certainly no need for it in 2024.

it's all on Spotify. you can start and end wherever you want and make your own ultimate tracklist, there's no need for a short sharp 10 track affair.

Which has just entirely defeated your earlier point about playing the whole thing through :D

And besides, if I want to play an album, I generally play it on vinyl- AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT’S GONE WELL :D

no it hasn't. I personally am happy to play a whole album and then figure out which ones I wanna go back to. but if one's attention span is too short... you have other options!

Look, there is so much to digest with this. I mean, it’s an album- it’s designed to be listened to as a whole. And yes, I realise that in 2024 with streaming that might have changed but I don’t believe this is how this album is designed. Otherwise it’s just a playlist. If the intention is to cherry pick rather than have a body of work as a whole, you don’t put interludes in for starters.

All I’m saying is what I’ve heard so far bored me enough to turn it off. Surely THAT alone is a cardinal sin in a Spotify world where album track play counts show people switch off if they aren’t hooked. Ten tracks in and it was tedious and a chore. Will I try the rest? Probably.

I’ve generally been like that with every Beyonce record for the last decade plus. This one is just the most listenable for me. First one where I’ve actually wanted to play something more than once rather than abandon and completely forget it ever existed.

Otherwise I totally agree with everything.

I loved Lemonade and Beyoncé and the earlier ones all had good things going for them.

The most recent two have been just…there for me. Not awful, just boring. Well, what I’ve listened to of Cowboy Carter, that is.

(I just played Daughter though, and that was quite good…)

Four tracks in and I’ve had enough, god this is boring. If the influence was going to be country music where is this album’s 5,6,7,8 may I ask

I’m sorry but “Texas Hold ‘Em” is way more YEE-HA RIDE EM COWBOY than Steps could ever DREAM of being!

I’m not sure he was being ENTIRELY serious, love… :D

And don’t worry Shee and Su. The New York Times shit all over Sgt Pepper when it came out. The critic apologised 50 years later and blamed it on a faulty stereo. You have plenty of time :disco:

I think I'm enjoying today's listen the most so far. previously I'd struggled a bit with the first third but I'm enjoying it all.

however I still think it all kicks up a gear with lovely hypnotic ALLIGATOR TEARS! what a quiet storm of a tune. that guitar is everything.

Big helpings are good for your Spotify stats rather than your audience - no-one releases such a long album without having that in mind.

The initial release of Sgt Pepper was in Mono. He only needed one working speaker. Poor excuse.

one song refusing to grow on me is II MOST WANTED with Miley. feels a bit overblown and I'm not sure I like the blend of their voices

Though didn't they then do something STUPID like put the instruments in one track and the vocals in the other.

Truly the WORST BAND to EVER EXIST

I’m now up to Ya Ya and with the exception of the aforementioned Daughter, it’s more of the same. 🥱

What is this tour Beyoncé is doing? Is it a tribute act or her? Dates in SLOUGH, JARROW, and BINGLEY!? The Glasgow date is at Maggie’s Rock n Roll Rodeo?
Fuck off this is iconic :D

Based purely on me going back to this album on Spotify a lot this week, Texas Hold 'Em appears to be doing over 5m streams a DAY. Not bad for a song that's been out for weeks.

The big songs off the album are all doing over 2m a day and the rest of the album is not far behind. This is a stone cold HIT.

Not for Pepper but pretty much all early stereo mixes were done like that.

"I had to trust God's timing". Which was so tight, there's tracks missing on the vinyl and CD.

remix of Texas Hold Em which has a completely new verse/hook from around the 2 minute mark

LOVE

With respect, I do understand people being put off by the sheer length of it.

My attitude now is that if youre going to create an album that goes way over an hour in playtime, it MUST be a masterpiece.

Do I think this is? No. No I don’t.

It is very good though!

I am just completely obsessed with this album. I can understand where Sheena's criticism comes from. But personally, this bloated, self-indulgent, sprawling mess is doing it for me.
