BIG REVEAL FRIDAY

Good morning. I went out for “a drink” with a friend last night and ended up having many drinks and getting home too late for a work night. I feel like absolute shit now.

Luckily I’m in the right state of mind for the new Adele song :disco:

Same, off to bf's island for the weekend, just had a train ride in the worst possible weather and the ferry ride is still ahead. I adore summerish coastal towns off-season, there's a beauty in the silence and having it all for yourself, perhaps it'll be sth you like too!

We saw an AMAZING house in Topsham online last night with views over the estuary, but it was something like 2.5m :D

I love Cornwall in winter. There's something about the granite cliffs against a heavy sky and thrashing steel sea. But Cornwall just feels too far from everywhere.

I think the key is finding a town which has enough of its own identity and functions as a town in its own right rather than one which is mainly holiday parks and tourists.

We really do need to make sure we visit likely contenders at all times of year in all weathers.
 
I don't remember how old you said you were when you moved the the island, @Rachey, but it was in childhood, wasn't it?

Yep I was 10 ish. My older brother was 13. I know my mum regretted the move for a year or so as it was a big adjustment from where we came from. But she's still here now with no plans to move and Mt younger brother who moved off 5 years ago to live in London, has just bought a house on the island and is moving back in a month or so with his wife.
 
I'm not sure I'd be considering this 10 years ago, but it kind of feels right to be working towards it now.

I've always considered myself very much a city person and I know I'll feel the urge to wander in a city frequently - hence wanting to be close to Exeter, which although only a small city does have a good vibe largely because of the university. And I'll still only be little more than an hour away from Bristol. It can take that to get from one side of the city to the other anyway.

What's your reason for this move? Just fancy a slower pace of life?

Mr L has always said he wanted to retire to the seaside, since I met him in his early 30s. I'm probably still pretty ambivalent personally; I don't feel the pull as much as him but equally I'm not against it, either - and that has changed over the years from when I simply couldn't imagine it. I do get a real sense of calm near the water though. And by water I mean the sea proper, not the Severn estuary or Bristol Channel which are a lot closer.

I guess I'm at the age where I'm thinking towards retirement (particularly as he is 7 years older than me) and that does make you reassess things.

Sounds like a good enough reason as any to move. If you hate it you can always come back. I think you'll end up really enjoying the slower pace of life tho

All my friends have been really supportive of the shop since we open. All have visited and share our posts.

Apart from one, who I've been very good friends with for 25 years. We used to do everything together and still (I thought) get on well.

But she's shown absolutely no interest, never asks how it's doing, never likes or shares anything.

And I totally get that everyone has their own lives, but she manages to share a local waffle shops posts every few days.

Am I wrong to be a bit annoyed?
 
I don't think it's illegal to not particularly like fudge, though

My own partner only reads the articles we publish if I tell her, don't take it personally, just focus on what you're doing.

She does like fudge, that's what's annoying. But she's a typical islander who lives in one town so can't possibly visit another town or show any interest in anything in a different town.

On the flip side, I was convinced no one paid any attention to my work, but recently a few mates sent me messages talking about how they were enjoying it, which proper touched me, so sometimes people are just rooting for you without you realising.
 
I mean you don’t have the chew it, it just sort of melts in your mouth.

I realise I’m explaining fudge while Rachey is right there so I’ll step aside :D

Yeah true. I'd rather they rooted for me by buying stuff tho :D

We've got really quiet this last week so naturally I'm panicking.
 
It's like a crumbly, soft, sweet but of goodness. It's actually really hard to explain. We get a lot of Americans in asking what it's like so it's easier just to give them some to try.

I hope so. We've been told there should be, and we do gift boxes. We were very busy for father's day gifts, that's the only other event we've been open for.

Are you allowed to do your own recipes, or do you have to follow Roly's recipes?
 
Still no Roly's in Teignmouth by the way. I'll have to go to Torquay or make do with Edward's or whatever the local place is called.
