Recommend me a board game. Particularly a board game for two that we can play in a Tier 4 Christmas.

Have a look here for a few ideas;

I didn’t notice we already had a thread. SORRY!

And as for geekiness, I don’t want to have to dress up as a WARLORD.

For two players you have both competitive and cooperative options at entry level that are QUITE FUN. I think you need to find the ones that thematically speak to you more as to be honest there are dozens are solid good fun.

Pandemic is a good entry-level co-op game and it's quite TOPICAL. I also like playing Azul and Sintra - these are beautiful and fun for two even if they were probably designed for 3-4 players in mind, they're more like 1 player games with several people at the same time though. Another entry level game is Ticket to Ride, if you're into the whole travelling aspect even if IRONICALLY THESE DAYS. I also like Carcassone, you have to connect tiles using terrain and claim points for all your connections, it's simple to understand and not too taxing, and every game feels different.

There are also many resource management board games that can get quite long and intense for 2 players if you're looking for that kind of experience - Scythe, Civilization: A New Dawn or Twilight Struggle which you'll see mentioned as probably the DEFINITIVE 2 player game but it can be a bit much to jump into for first timers. However any game that allows you to play SALVADOR ALLENDE and MARGARET THATCHER as WILD CARDS is clearly something SPECIAL!

I can't remember the last time I played a game. I think I don't do FUN well at all.

Even when @Star tried to get me involved in zoom games at peak lockdown I got bored in two seconds flat and zoned out.

Odin’s Raven is a calming two player game. You have to lay down tiles to get your raven back home first.

Exploding Kittens and Love Letters are also fun card games. Ticket to Ride is a great longer game. My favourite is probably Splendour though - you have to collect jewels to buy cards.

if you want a fun app game to play then Spaceteam is very funny, and you will inevitably end up shouting at each other in sheer panic.

I tried to have a board game pub afternoon on my (pre lockdown) birthday this year.

Ticket to Ride went down pretty well. It's pretty easy to get the hang of and involved enough to last for a good couple of hours.

Where is Moldova was a huge flop though. It's so needlessly convoluted!

Splendour, that's the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember! it is indeed good

I miss our board game nights! :(

Love a bit of Cluedo. :disco: As for card games- Shithead (or Castle if you insist on not being fooking foul mouthed) is good fun.

I bought two. Twilight Struggle and some one called Duel or something which Mr Sheena liked. I’ll report back.

Is GAME OF LIFE still going?

mind you that would be kind of IRONIC in the current climate

“you’ve just won a holiday for the family” oh FUCK OFF

Twilight Struggle is really good fun but don't be discouraged if your first couple of games are LONG and a bit ARDUOUS. The game gets much better as you get the hang of it!

Not a 2 player though but its a fucking great game

Duel is really good! Get Splendour too if you like Duel.

Duel tip: don’t bother going down the science route

I've been beaten by someone doing science so many times online.

I've never played Twilight Struggle, but I think it's quite intense isn't it?

Right, as soon as Tier 4 is over I'm coming round for an evening with you and Mr Star after Kylie and Dannii have gone to bed - haven't spent time with you without your gorgeous little pop stars there to take all the attention for YEARS.

The Lord Of The Rings and the Andor board games are great for two. But also hugely demoralising cause you end up flopping/dying in 3 out of 4 attempts.

So that's great if you want a board game that makes you feel extra anxious.

i think I would find playing board games with you VERY STRESSFUL :D

You'd actually be surprised! I don't THINK it's stressful... I'm popular for having board game nights with so I'd hope it doesn't stress people too much or I'm doing something wrong! :D

I've bought loads of board games recently. One of my favourite party games lately is definitely Wavelength

So as the clue-giver you have a category like "Hard to do VS Easy to do" as per the above. You spin the wheel and you can see that the point-scoring area is somewhere on that spectrum, so if it's more to the right, you have to give your team a clue about something that's quite easy to do but not the easiest thing ever, and hope they turn the dial to the right area before the BIG REVEAL. The other team can also guess whether the maximum points are to the right or the left of where the team has chosen.

ANYWAY it's really good.

The other games I've bought recently include

Jaws
Azul
Obscurio
Stella (Dixit spin-off)
Micro Macro (this seems really fun, it's a big picture of a city and you have to try and spot little storylines happening)

I haven't played any of those yet because my housemate doesn't really like board games 🥴

Dub can I come back to Dubline and we'll have a night of board games please
