Books you've read in 2023 (1 Viewer)

I recently finished The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferranti and really think it's my favourite new book I've read in years.

just a gorgeous story about adolescence and growing pains, being a child of divorce, blooming sexuality, the culture of Italy (or specifically Naples) in the 90s, and one of the best and most real depictions of female friendship I've ever come across. I'm dying for a sequel. the Netflix adaptation is also utterly fantastic.

Have you read the original Neapolitan quartet? Because I think those blow this one out of the water. They’re some of my favourite books ever, and the series they’ve been making of it in the last few years has been sublime.

I need to give those another try. I started the first one but I don't think I was in the right headspace for it
 
I am really struggling with the new Bret Easton Ellis. The story is addictive and the reason I keep going back, but the writing is making it a bit of a slog.

I read the first chapter, which is about 3 pages but took a good 20 minutes, and have not picked it up again since :D

on the list! maybe I'll skip my queue (suddenly the last 5-10 books I bought all seem boring) and get straight into it :disco:
 
I think every book by Bret Easton Ellis that I read was a slog. I didn't mind American Psycho back in the day because it's pretty funny (and I was a bit of a gorehound), then I struggled to finish Glamorama, Less Than Zero and Lunar Park. I was gifted Imperial Bedrooms but never made it beyond 50 pages or so. Ellen Barkin is right about him.

I'm trying to get back into reading, I just haven't fancied reading too much over the last year since I'm looking at texts for work all day long.
I finished the second part of David Sedaris' diaries (some funny and poignant parts, some tedious bits) and started Less is Lost, which is not as good as the previous one so far.
Then I have Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen lined up, hope it's better than Purity.
I also bought To Paradise and the sheer size of it is scaring me...

Moopy, talk to me about kindles. What's a good one? I don't need a huge amount of storage as I can delete books once I've read them. But I've seen they vary in price from £95 to over £200!

I'd get a cheaper one. I haven't used mine in a while, but if I do all I really want is something to read on and something with decent battery life. Anything additional is surplus in so much as I already have a phone or tablet for that and don't need the distraction when reading.

That's exactly what I said to Mandy. She suggested a tablet so I can do other things but I know I'd get distracted. I literally just want to read.

Is kindle the only make 🤔
 
I have a paperwhite, with inverted screen turned on, and it's insanely comfortable to read. That would be my recommendation.

Try Rules of Attraction , it’s by far my favorite

Also, do you have to subscribe to kindle apps you pay for to get books? Or can you get free ones?

I've got that and it's fab.
You can/do get some free books. You don't need to subscribe you can also just buy individual books. There's always good offers.
 
Ok so I don't have to pay to subscribe to Amazon Kindle then. Because I begrudge giving Amazon anymore monthly money.

I think I'm going to miss an actual book :( but the new one I'm reading was leant to me, it's by Ruth Jones and it's a hardback. I hadn't realised how heavy and uncomfortable a hardback would be.
 
You can also borrow ebooks from your local library (but you’d need a kindle fire for that, or ipad)

I use the local library audio book rental service. It’s great.
 
I'm not sure how I feel about audio books. I haven't quite got into them yet. But I have just signed up to all the island libraries. I havent set foot in a library since it was all paper based and they stamped the little card in the front of the book with the return date.
 
I’m kind of DYING at this RACHEY LEARNS HOW TO READ narrative but also kind of pleased you have.

I mean, I understand for most people the whole "omg I'm reading" thing is very old news as most people have read for years. But this is very exciting for me so I'm embracing it while it lasts.
 
@Rachey, as you're a popular fiction kind of girl (as am I very much for fiction), I'd very much recommend Lisa Jewell. Her earlier books are more chick lit/rom com type affairs, but more recently she's moved into thriller/mystery/suspense.

Ooh the earlier books sound exactly what I'd like!

Carole Matthews is my current favourite. Although I've just started a Ruth Jones one. It hasn't gripped me yet.
 
I'm wondering if 2 people can use one kindle unlimited log in 🤔

Also picked up a book called Nightbitch, because I liked the title. Also a couple of short Penguin books on individual monarchs. One was Stephen, because we all love anarchy and the other was one of the Henry's from the 1200s, I forget right now.
