Bop or Flop - "Better Than Today"

WHAT's the point in living if you don't wanna DANCE?!

Always hated this to be honest
Baffling single choice
Baffling live performance
Baffling everything
No no and no

I mean it’s the inferior Nerina Pallot collab, give me Aphrodite ANYDAY

oh I love this one. never got the hate. très boppy. lovely squiggly SYNTH RIFF!

I don't hate it, but not a single especially with the whole Aphrodite theme and the grandness of All The Lovers etc. I can see the direction they were going in with the Scissor Sisters sound that was a thing at the time. This is fun for the STAGE and fun for the TOUR

It’s great. Probably not a single with hindsight, but I don’t think anything really did scream hit other than the first two.

I actually QUITE ENJOY this. I'm baffled this attracted so much vitriol when everyone cooed over the preceding lazy rehash Get Outta My Way.

Objectively clearly a flop sadly.

I find it to be chintzy rubbish, but more than anything I just don’t understand who it was supposed to be for?

Her A&R really was a nightmare from the late 00s through much of the 2010s. So many individually great moments buried in albums with no identity and baffling single releases. That’s one thing she’s (mostly) really improved on since Golden.

Is this not deliberate as downloads/streaming came in to make you listen to the whole thing though? I'm sure Lost Without You and Rain Up Shitter being shafted onto "deluxe" versions wasn't by accident. It feels like there was always one deliberate choice. (Basically today's equivalent of fleecing fans to buy 485739 different colours of the same vinyl.)

Sure, but I can’t think of any of her albums from X through to Kiss Me Once that had a particularly coherent theme or singles campaign. It was all a lot of throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck.

I’m ready for her to move on from the Tension cocktail bar pop thing now, but I’d argue all of her albums since Golden have felt a lot more focused and coherent.

I’d argue that only really started last year when she featured or would feature just about anyone that couldn’t dash for the fire exit by the count of three to very mixed results.

"Aphrodite" should have been the fourth "we might as well" single. Better Than Today is FINE melodically but it needed to be BEEFIER. It has a good hook but it's just so limp.

#never5get the X Factor performance where she fell over and when Dermot asked when it was out she replied "SOON! It's out VERY SOON!" (it was out already)

Sorry but just rewatching the X Factor performance and howling at "Dannii what did you think about that?"
[Unintelligible]"Whaa!" :hostage:

I completely forget that happened, the brain really has a way from protecting you of reliving bad events that you are pushing to the side. 🙏

God that X Factor perf was just SAD.

I agree, not that I think it would have been a huge smash or anything, but the title track would at least have been a more fabulous moment to trot out on the promo circuit and could conceivably have cracked the top 20/30.

Cupid Boy and Can't Beat the Feeling are lifeless/painfully generic turd and would have been likelier to shart than chart, let's be real.

Aphrodite was a missed single opportunity though. but the performance of GOMW suggests nothing would've been a hit hit.

Would anything have done *worse* than BTT though? I think at that period in her career, that chart position reflected that basically nobody but her most devoted fans cared to fork out for it.

wrong! We had Cupid Boy, Aphrodite, and Can't Beat The Feeling, all of them could have done fine as a third single - at least they could have performed better than BTT!

Title track at a push, but none of the rest. Get Out My Way only got one week top thirty, I can’t imagine anything else would’ve done better than about #29 if it was lucky.

I could see a remix of Too Much potentially working.

Or of course if she’d recorded the other (far superior) song Nerina Pallot wrote for her at the time and given it a proper production.

Chintzy really is the best word to describe this song. Brava!!

I wouldn't turn it off, but wouldnt actively seek it out either.

And as I haven't listened to the album for years as the thin, cheap and tinny production of much of it offends me, I don't remember the last time I did hear it.

I will always think of Better Than Today as a RECESSION ANTHEM, as famously labelled by @Roe-st Potato 🥔 🌳

Kylie working with Calvin Harris around the time he blew up massively but being saddled with an obvious off-cut like Too Much was very unfortunate. She definitely could've had a top 10 with a proper collab.

Too Much was given away with a free Daily Fail CD wasn't it, so it got some kind of release :)

I need to listen to Too Much again but I remember the excitement and anticipation for it and it not living up to that but that there is a proper banger in there somewhere but it didn't transpire. The demo was probably better!
