It was a stark reinvention from Stripped, but does anyone still use it? Kworb says it gets a paltry 33k streams a day.

I don’t use it, but I have fond memories of the album itself and buying it release day. Hurt is by far the best single from the album for me, though I like Slow Down Baby too if that counts. As far as the non singles go, Save Me From Myself, Welcome, Makes Me Wanna Pray, Understand, all great.

 
It’s a big MEH for me. I like the concept and she looks/sounds great BUT the song is so janky and I hate the music.

Give me Candyman any day of the week over this
 
I can kinda see what she was trying to do, but it just fell somewhat flat after Stripped.

Christina has one of the most unpleasant, abominable, and awful discographies in pop music. Yet, it still blows my mind she continues to tour around the world despite not being an active recording artist and digging out album tracks to fill the setlists :disco: Legends only they say.
 
As someone who usually can't stand her and isn't ordinarily a fan of all her vocal histrionics, somewhat surprisingly I've always liked this.
 
Not a flop but not a bop either. It showed when it didn't go to number 1 after the success of Stripped. Hurt was my pick from Back to Basics.
 
the poll directly contradicts the rules of bop or flop. and frankly I'm pissed that I don't have to choose one way or the other, either of which I'd regret because this song is neither bop nor flop. it's fun enough WHEN IT'S ON. but why not just listen to Candyman?

The main reason I like that song is because John Galliano used it in this fashion show. Christina's voice emerging at 9:00 and suddenly CURSING the whole show will never not be iconic to me. The whole thing is just gay af :disco:

(The entire soundtrack is fabulous TBH - also has Kelis "Acapella" and Diana Ross "Lovechild").

 
We must admit the opening note of her VMA performance might be the best vocal ever delivered in an award show: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYOHHHHHHHOHHHHHHHH!

 
The opening note to this is one of the worst sounds I’ve ever heard in my life, and I listen to some right ropey shit.
 
I have zero recollection of this song so I presumed it must have flopped in the UK but I actually see that it was a fairly sizeable hit? Surprised that it's left (what feels to me like) zero cultural imprint. Anyway, count me alongside the estimable posters who appreciate that the ridiculous and the sublime are often synonymous. What a BOP! :disco:
 
The funny thing about Christina is that her instincts about where to go next were usually not wrong - a retro soul sound in the mid 00s, a more futuristic electro-pop sound in the late 00s - but she was always i) too late and ii) suffered from others doing it better, faster, and more succinctly (Back to Black, The Fame Monster).

It's sad in a way because in the early 00s, she was probably the most exciting pop star we had.
 
I definitely don't like it, but it did unequivocally strike on the hit parades and set the album up well. What happened next was people then had a bloated 2 disc album to salvage about 6 keepers from. A total souvenir of that generation's enormous pop idols growing up and having such grotesque command as to absolutely kill their own careers by retaining almost nothing what drove previous blockbuster successes. I still can't believe how awful, oh, about three quarters of that album is.
 
Let's have a RE-listening party; some people deserve to suffer.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever listened to it in full because frankly, I never had the urge or the need. The album has about 6 solid bops at a stretch.

It would have made a very decent 10-12 track album. It still captures the retro vibe she was going for. Ain’t No Other Man isn’t good but I suppose it works as a statement of intent.

1. Enter the Circus/Welcome
2. Back in the Day

5. Candyman
6. Slow Down Baby
7. On Our Way
8. Understand
9. I Got Trouble
10. Hurt
11. Save Me From Myself

But even that is a sizable drop off from Stripped.
