I'm going there for a week for a work thing. Can't wait! Never been to South America. Will be staying between Sao Paolo and Santos.
Recommendations etc. most welcome

From where you're based and with only a week getting to Rio de Janeiro at some point has to be the priority if you can. There's not much going on in Sao Paulo but the scenery and culture in Rio is unlike anywhere else.
 
Rio was a complicated one on my own. I was warned a lot about it being unsafe, including by the customers I was visiting in Campinas the week before.
When on you’re own you will need to use your phone for directions, etc. All of which I was warned not to do.
In the end, it took me a couple of days to understand that neighbourhoods like Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are generally safe during the day. Other areas require you to be more vigilant.
 
The old town in Rio is pretty sketchy. Beware, because that’s where you have the famous Escadaria Selarón.

I really enjoyed the botanical garden and Santa Teresa neighbourhood. Christ the Redeemer + Pao Açúcar are the obvious stops with the best views of the city.

Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana are all nice for a walk.

Botafogo mall (top level café/restaurant) has a nice view of Pao Açúcar + the bay.

Sao Paolo felt generally safer. But I also stayed there after Rio, so I might have been more used to Brazil by that point 🤷🏼‍♀️

Most guides say it’s not such an important stop if you’re visiting the country, but I loved it!

Places to visit: Old City, Mercado Municipal, Parqué Ibirapuera, Avenida Paulista and MASP.

I stayed around Jardins and Pinheiros both really nice neighbourhoods.
 
Thank you all. I'm a bit more cautious in my older age so I will definitely take your advice on Rio. I shall stick to the tried and tested routes of course and behave of course. :angel:
 
I don’t really have anything to add for a short trip other than don’t expect English to be widely spoken. I’m fluent in Portuguese so was not an issue for me but my friend was surprised at this, they’d gone with lazy English speaker expectations. The tourist areas will obviously have a few more English speakers.

Madame X is a stronger speaker I’m afraid but good effort, you’re almost fluent.

“O mundo é selvagem”. The accent over the ‘e’ creates a different word and pronunciation. Yes, I’m a vibe kill.

I've spent about 6 weeks in Rio and never had any experiences where I felt unsafe.

Don't go to the beach at night, for sure. Keep your wits about you, always. But Rio is probably my favourite city to travel to.
 
A week isn't enough time to do anything I'd recommend though. Paraty is a beautiful little colonial town, Isla Grande is a great place, and you're not a million miles away from the stunning Ilha de Santa Catarina. But if you're only there for a week you may as well just explore Sao Paolo and maybe trip to Rio for a day or two.
