It seems so, they have reduced the international categories to male and female, probably Brexit related.

Apparently the reduction in awards (from 14 to 9) will allow for more performances. Who knows what delights we have in store?

I was going to write a whole rant and suggest who should have been nominated...but then I realised I absolutely do not care enough

It's rumoured that from next year they are abolishing the gendered awards entirely. Women may as well not bother turning up.

They've had a bit of trouble with it. When they gave it to Pink in 2019, that was the first time since 2000 that it hadn't been given to white blokes. Also, she's not British. Of course, in 2000, it was the Spice Girls which went down like a knackered lift with the "establishment" given that their Outstanding Contribution was deemed to be their exceptionally high sales. A lot of artists turned it down too because a performance is mandatory so no Kate Bush then.

I think by 2000 The Spice Girls were just seen as a knackered force and people’s opinions of them was at an all time low. The award was definitely deserved, but I think if they got it now and performed it would be a completely different story.

It's crap, and I suspect the reason why they have changed the name from 'Breakthrough Act' to 'New Artist' in a slight attempt to cover it up.

Never mind the fact that Mabel was also nominated for Critics' Choice in 2018 as well. Three years running being nominated for an award which is essentially the industry deciding who they are going to foist on us.

Still, at least she isn't an ugly white man dribbling on about love, I suppose.
