How could you be arsed doing the same speech in two languages!?

Surely all the French speakers know English and already know what he's said.
 
His fall has been kinda tragic. His own party has been pushing him to resign for some time I think.

Would genuinely like to know what percentage of Canadians speak French but not English AND watch a live statement by the PM, before we all get on our high horses. It just seemed like an unusual choice to do both alternating rather than picking one for live and doing material in the other for the broadcast news.

Firstly, ChatGPT is shite. Trust me on that one. It's hilarious and scary to see how the public have fallen for it when it's so blindingly obvious. It can't even cope perfectly with simple commands in one language and everyone seems to laugh at that but then accepts that translation is great because they don't understand and because it looks grammatically and stylistically better than what we're used to from AI translation (so Google Translate and the suchlike). People are accepting what they see as perfect, or at least correct.

Automated live interpreting is better, but it's still not perfect and that is not acceptable at that level.

It doesn't matter how many speak English if its their second language. You instantly put a considerable proportion of your nation (and electorate) at a disadvantage by making them try and understand something in a language that is not their own. It's something like a quarter of the population who don't have English as their first language, by the way, which is a massive amount of people. Saying "Oh it should only be in English" is, at best, discriminatory, at worst, racist/ colonial/ include your own word here as I can't quite get the right one.

We have the same situation here with Welsh, by the way- everything official in Wales must also be presented in Welsh.

Based on the 2021 census, only 4.3 million of the population in Quebec have some knowledge of English (52%), compared to 7.7 million Francophones (94%).

What I found odd, as someone who watched it live (I don't know if you did) is that by switching between languages as he delivered what was a personal statement, it made it seem less from the heart and more rehearsed. Imagine Theresa May croaking out "the country I love" and then rewinding a few paragraphs to do the same in Welsh.

Granted it is the first time I think I've ever watched him live and I imagine it is much less unusual to Canadians, as I think it's something he did throughout his premiership. Not sure how many of Canada's PMs have been comfortably bilingual to be able to the same. His father presumably at least.

Oh, except when it comes to culture, language and having our elected representatives speak to us directly :D
 
And I presume similar things DO happen in the Welsh Parliament. I can't say I know enough about it or how it is provided there in terms of live speech.

Presumably in Canada they don't hold things up with repeating everything twice and they likely employ interpreters and the suchlike, but for a momentous occasion like this, it's absolutely the right decision.
