It turned TWENTY YEARS OLD today. I've decided I like it a lot but it's truly the VIDEO that slaps:



A bit of a flop in the States (#48) although it got her the press it needed to and set her up for a comeback with "Beautiful". #1 in the UK.
 
The original Jessy Nelson. Appropriating cultures, radical image change, snatching a rapper for urban cred, and lots and LOTS of fake spray tan.
Dirrty will always be legendary. I remember it flopping in the States but it just feels bigger than ever; maybe because she never managed to make something else as iconic as this :(
 
I know chartwise it was flop in America but I’m assuming that’s based down solely to airplay being the only dominant factor then and actually it was very well known and huge across every other metric (such as TRL/MTV etc)? Bit like Slave 4 U?
I mean the album opened with nearly 500k on the back of it.

Anyway, it’s obviously grand and I probably should’ve gone a ten.
 
I appreciate the impact and I enjoy it whenever it pops on but it’s not a song I ever choose to play.

I did some digging and it spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100 (songs that chart 20+ weeks are removed if they fall below #50). That is pretty incredible for a #48 peak.

It performed decent on both pop radio (#14) and rhythmic (#20) but probably peaked at different times, hence the relatively low Hot 100 peak.

And yeah it got played tons on MTV/TRL and she was very visible at the time through that medium, but unfortunately that was never a factor for the Hot 100.
 
A great tune. I just never have any desire to ever listen to it again. I’m completely done with it.
 
It's quite an UNRELENTING SLEAZE of a song and the video matches it note by note.

I also love the rap which is RARE for me but the lead-up to it is incredible.
 
Also the move she pulls in the last 5 seconds of the video where she dry-humps her STANDING dancer wrapping her leg around his waist is the fucking stuff of legends and I wish I could sometime REPLICATE it in a club (with a LOOKALIKE of the dancer pls).
