What’s everyone’s general consensus on Fairytale of New York? I tried to explain to my extended family that even though it’s a great song and Christmas classic I should still be able to take offence by the fact it contains a horrible slur. Most agreed, but a small minority thought I was being ‘over sensitive’.

I enjoyed the suggestions this year that the offending line can be replaced with “I love Diane Abbott” or, possibly even better, “You taped over Taggart”.

I tried to be reasonable and explain I understand that it was written in a different era and Kirsty is not directly targeting a homosexual in the song, but that as a gay man I’d rather not hear a pub full of straight men sing a long to a song that uses faggot as an insult.

What’s everyone’s general consensus on Fairytale of New York? It's one of the only Christmas songs I can stand given they're all played over and over from September onwards every single year Hearing them slagging each other off is a breath of fresh air

Not personally offended despite leaning quite a ways over in that direction on the Kinsley scale - I think of it as telling him he resembles a meatball in gravy anyway. But I can understand it'd get awkward in some pubs etc. More bothersome is the instance in 'Money For Nothing' which does target gays.
