Confessions on a Dance Floor vs Confessions II

The very first day of my current job - approximately 20 years ago, I walked out of the Underground and as if by magic, Jump came onto my iPod. 'There's only so much you can learn in one place...' - it felt like a bit of a sign. I had a 14 week contract for that job. I'll be finishing it in December, so this feels very much like a full circle moment with Confessions II - so it's hit me at the right time in the right place and aside from the fact it's very good, it also has a bit of extra ompf in the whole being resonant for me right now. And Madonna was bang on, there is only so much you can learn in one place, and actually, I stayed way way too long - so I'm happy to go on new adventures, with her in my ear, having her new adventures.
 
my top 3 will always be ROL, Bedtime Stories and Erotica, then it’s a bit of mix n match between LAP, True Blue and Madonna. After that I’d say COAD2 is in with a shout because it falls off sharply. It might even edge above True Blue eventually. But I can’t see it getting higher than 6th.

Right now, I'm guessing Confessions II will land top 5 at least.
 
I'm probably the flip to Funky, and my (relative) ambivalence is probably genre preference as much as anything.

House music leaves me cold more often than not. I take my dance music of the euphoric / borderline trance variety. "Get Together", "Jump", and "Future Lovers" delivered in spades, and I don't get that rush here.

It's still a perfectly decent 8/10 record, and absolutely trumps everything from "Hard Candy" on. It's the first time since then it feels like she's had a firm and cohesive artistic vision beyond "how do I get back in the sharts". And as reductive as it is to bring age into it, that this is all from a woman approaching 70 is incredible work.

This reads as harsh but I just don’t go back to it at all. I rated it a lot higher at the time, as I was definitely caught up in the momentum of its success (and the tour was so good).

And some songs like Sorry which are just purely for the eurodance masses leave me absolutely cold.
 
Also I’m not massively driven by lyrics in pop albums, but already Confessions II is way more interesting and provocative, thematically.
 
The COADF singles are all excellent but the rest is a mix of filler and slightly above that.

I need more time with II to fully determine though.
 
Ooh. I'm totally in the mood to do an album rank. I'll have to rank the songs in Confessions II first though.
 
Confessions II easily. It’s a rush all the way through and in general hangs together as a piece much better than COADF does.

I’d never really bought into COADF’s legendary status anyway, and kind of felt it was being clung onto as such by fans partly because of the extreme 20-year drop in quality that came after it.

There are plenty of skippers on there. And yes it possesses high points that the sequel doesn’t, but they’re mostly thanks to Björn and Benny anyway so should be treated as outliers.

Agree very closely with this. I think only Push vs School would be different. Arguably Bring Your Love vs Future Lovers too, but I’m not quite there yet.

If anything though, I think whichever way you slice it (16- or 12-track edition), the second half of Confessions II leaves COADF in the dust.
 
I like that they don't align for a symmetrical comparison. The big 3 from COAD for me are Hung Up, Get Together and Forbidden Love. The first 2 win their head to heads hands down, but Everything is probably emerging as my absolute favourite from Confessions II - they're hardly similar but both pool fearfully from really, crystallised and crisp electronics. At the moment I think I'd get FL out the burning house first, but Everything just goes so full pelt and kind of goes ugly to conjured something even more utterly utterly. Ugh.
