I'm looking at my first pub visit next Thursday evening. I'm ridiculously looking forward to it.

I wouldn't, aside from the (very) occasional "one for yourself" out of the blue as normal

There's no way I'm going to let this be an opportunity to import yet MORE tipping from the US - once it starts it's like Christmas, you can never stop it...
 
I had a haircut yesterday, so many new precautions in place it felt absolutely fine. And yet couple of my friends are aghast and accusing me of having a death wish... I wonder how some people are ever going to brave enough to venture out.

Yes, I had one on Monday. I haven’t touched my hair since February so as vacuous as it may sound it did give me a bit of a mental lift. It’s just a regular local barber’s and it felt very organised and safe. Personally I haven’t felt too threatened by this as I work from home and live alone and have followed the rules so am highly unlikely to pass something on. In the event of catching something I’m happy to self isolate for 14 days, i have pretty much done it for four months anyway.
 
I was craving a McChicken Mayo. Yes yes I know, go stand in the corner and think about what you've done.

Maccies seemed pretty reasonable - greeter on the door to tell you what to do, socially distanced "queue" for pickup (but of course you jump the "queue" if your number comes up sooner)

Sat outside and snaffled it like the disgusting creature I am and a starving seagull came over and started pleading at me. Took all my strength not to feed it. Hasn't been a good time for gulls lately

I went into Meadowhall today, very briefly, less than 20 minutes.

it was very well set out with specific entrances and exits, one way systems which were mostly being adhered to and a traffic light system to show if you could go into the shop or had to wait.

i went to get something I couldn’t get anywhere else and have no reason to go again any time soon but it wasn’t a wholly negative experience.
 
US 14-day rolling average: cases up 53%, deaths up 25%. Just over a week ago deaths were down 25% vs two weeks prior. It's all going very QUICKLY to SHIT and particularly in the red states Trump is relying on. He's fucked!

He's wearing a mask now. It's "dark black" and he likes that it makes him look like "the lone ranger" - you really can't make this shit up
 
And yet I was just reading the other day that the guy who has got almost every election right going back decades reckons he has a 91% chance of being reelected. Never underestimate the stupidity of that country :( (I say that out of solidarity knowing how stupid ours is as well)

Of course, there's always the chance he could suddenly decide to care about the coronavirus by way of saying "it's too risky to have all these people turning up at polling stations, I think I'll stay on for a bit" as seemingly no one will ever oppose him.

I do like the sudden shift in narrative. We clearly have too much testing, hence the increase in cases. :rolleyes:
 
The UK figures went up a fair bit yesterday too. I don’t know if they had some figures lying around that they added on a quiet day. WHO KNOWS?

I don't think cases going up a bit is a problem, that's clearly inevitable as things open up. But if they start rising uncontrollably and above the NHS's capacity to cope, we have a real problem.

I don't understand why we're reopening more and more things each week though. Surely we should have one set of loosening, wait three weeks to see what sort of impact it's had, then move onto the next step?

There were 73 cases on a farm in middleofnowhereshire yesterday, so that might be a contributing factor.
 
The figures went up from 512 new cases and 48 deaths on Friday to 820 new confirmed cases and 148 deaths on Saturday so quite a big jump. The figures are ALL OVER THE SHOP.
 
I am not even talking about today’s figures as Sunday and Monday figures are always way out.
 
Premature re-opening = spikes.

The question is, does any re-opening = spikes?

The Friday cases were uncharacteristically low this week so I’m not too concerned as long as the rolling average keeps going more or less in the right direction.

Any downward trend has kind of ground to a halt now but I think Boris and co have made it fairly clear that they’re all about “managing” this thing nowadays rather than eradicating it. :eyes:
 
This will definitely be off the back of the stuff coming out now around immunity. A new study has suggested that immunity may only last a few months. This throws the barely covert herd immunity strategy that the Government have been pursuing since the end of lockdown into complete disarray.



Now they will potentially LEGITIMATELY be focused on finding ways to keep infections low AND the economy going, avoiding the need for another full lockdown. Hence the masks.
 
Dithering, delay and u-turns.. but better late than never!

My theory with Gove et al is that the Tories are trying to play the "we're on your side" card to those who DON'T want to wear masks to soften the blow. Sort of a good cop bad cop thing?

I wouldn't panic about the antibodies thing. I'm no immunologist but it seems to not be the full story -there's these seemingly undetectable "T cells" and/or "memory cells" that could last much longer and fairly quickly release the antibodies when they're needed. Seems the body doesn't bother having antibodies floating around that it doesn't think it needs, but remembers how to make them when it does.
However, don't get complacent - while the antibodies aren't present, it can apparently spread. And from some of the horrifying reports you really do NOT want to catch this thing if you can help it.
I think also the vaccine when (if) it comes, will still help - it might last longer than natural immunity, and either way if it can be given to at LEAST the vulnerable every 3 months if need be then everyone else can get on with their lives. Or if they can somehow give it to everyone fairly quickly then we get a sort of "temporary herd immunity" that stamps it out.

I just cannot with the anti-mask brigade. I don't even vaguely UNDERSTAND IT!

If they went into hospital would they expect all the doctors and nurses to be UNMASKED also.
 
I hate wearing a mask, but understand why it's necessary , and won't object to wearing it in shops. However I feel some countries have gone a bit overboard where they're required in all public spaces including outside.
