Fair - it may well stay, true.

But if that is the case, why don't we socially distance the fuck out of our entire lives and never open pubs and restaurants again to prevent those 50,000 flu deaths a year?

I don’t think anyone is saying that though? I agree with you completely. Soon a degree of living as normal as we can with the virus is going to happen. But the reason we don’t socially distance for our lives for the flu is because it has been in circulation around the world since 1913 babe. Covid 19 has been here less than a YEAR
 
The secondary causes and issues that come with lockdowns/such draconian measures are just as important as Covid 19. No one is disputing that but for right now it is best to follow @Rita s advice in this thread. More time and research is needed before things go back to normal. I totally empathise with your situation @cwej regarding being around 100’s of people in work but not even being able to see friends etc. But as a teacher, that is a short straw you have drawn.
 
I've just been out for dinner in Soho and it was the slackest effort I've seen so far. Packed place, not a mask in sight and no interest from the staff in the track & trace app you a laminated sheet left on the table asked you to use. I won't be going back.

So there have been over a hundred confirmed cases at the university I work at, and 600 students are now self-isolating in the student accommodation. I won't currently be dealing directly with many students when I'm in my actual workplace, but I've never wanted to be on the campus less than I currently do.
 
At my uni, everyone knows someone that’s caught it or are self isolating :eyes:
 
What did they expect with universities? Even if you are a student not going to parties, it’s pretty much impossible to social distance in halls with shared facilities. They’re also now talking of banning students from going home at Christmas!

But Xmas is the best time for c0k when you go home and all the smooth uni twinks have returned after getting ploughed for 3 months and gagging 4 more.

Let's face it, we've lost control of it. Comprehensively. Shutting pubs an hour earlier will do diddly. Two options now: full lockdown, or just deal with it and try to stem the flow of deaths and long haul cases if/when the vaccine is available.

Personally I'm more in favour of the lockdown option, but that's my personal circumstances. It's still a very dangerous disease for anyone over 60 (parents) especially if they have comorbidities, and I really don't consider over 60 to be "on death's door" just yet. It's not an easy choice as lockdown screws over younger people and the economy and such. It's all shit, and feels like "things going very very bad indeed" is a given and we're just helplessly watching it in slow motion.

Comparing it to the Flu is BS. We know a heck of a lot more about the flu and how to treat it, we have a vaccine to help with it, and as far as I know the risk of death isn't quite so "holy fuck" to over 60s, at least until they get to the 80s and have all sorts of things going wrong.
 
We are waiting patiently for the first confirmed case at work... None yet so we've been lucky so far.
 
About 5% of our lot are self isolating but I think so far it's just contact tracing. Shows how prevalent it is though
 
I don’t think full lockdown is necessary in the sense of shutting everything down - why not just put a complete ban on households mixing like Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Got to be worth a punt SURELY...

A full lockdown simply cannot happen in my opinion. The economy will absolutely crumble and the secondary issues that come with it may outweigh the risk of the virus. More strict measures for sure but schools will never close again. Things will get back to normal. Mass gatherings like concert, sporting events etc are way wayyyyyyyy off though.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that this is a war between politicians and scientists. To be fair to this government they have acted pretty quickly this time. Also the 50,000 cases by October is definitely not a prediction. It is a tactic to make people listen. It is explained pretty well here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54255635

France and Spain have not followed that trajectory so hopefully the UK doesn't. This is like the final do as your told. There is a duty of care because with 40,000+ covid deaths already, more on the way and couple that with a nasty strain of flu that would put the NHS under immense pressure.

The world is a fucking strange place atm! Everyone is dealing/processing it differently. I genuinely feel for people in your profession. But hey, when this is all over hopefully you get the kudos you deserve for being a key worker in a pretty rotten situation. My mental health could not take it!

I attempted to use this logic on my mother, and I got a moment of confused “yes I suppose”, but she’s never admitted to being less than 100% right so she went back to “yeah but they’re still getting drunk and falling over each other etc”

really wish there was something else to talk about
 
Bars, restaurants close earlier. No gatherings, even outside. But you can still go to work and be with some 100 people and working from home is only ENCOURAGED :manson:
