Well here in Georgia we've been pretending it doesn't exist since late April so join the club!
 
Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine data out - 70% effectiveness. No hospitalisations. Should be good enough.
 
That sounds a bit disappointing after the 90/95% success rates announced last week. I wonder whether vulnerable/older people will get the Pfeizer vaccine and everyone else will get the Oxford one - that could work?
 
BBC are reporting 70% elsewhere (at least the Independent and Sky News) are reporting "up to 90%" whatever that means. They also say it's easier to store and administer than the other vaccinations. All in all, seems positive.

Something about if a half dose is administered first, then a full dose later, it seems to go up to 90% but they don't really understand why.
 
I think the issue is that the Pfizer and Moderna results were ridiculously good. The BBC is saying anything above 50% would usually be considered a triumph.

From memory the Oxford trial has a lot more people take part?
 
Does this mean we now get fighting over the type of vaccine people get?

"Oh no we don't want that rubbish Oxford one, only the 95% one is good enough for my little darlings".
 
I can’t tell if it’s true, but I read that the Pfizer trial didn’t do COVID-19 tests on asymptomatic participants. The Oxford trial did, and they are included in the 30%. That could explain why the percentage is lower - not comparing like with like.

That's interesting if true and a bit of a flaw in Pfizer's testing surely!
 
Interestingly, BBC News has just changed its headline from "Trial shows Oxford Covid vaccine is 70% effective" to "Trial shows Oxford Covid vaccine is highly effective". I think the 70% figure seems like more of a bummer than it actually is.

So basically:

Tier 1 is now tier 1.5
Tier 2 is now tier 3
Tier 3 is now lockdown but with a few more shops open

And it's expected most of the country will be in the latter tiers.

Well I sure do look forward to being in new tier 2 and going for a meal and only a meal in whatever pubs have tried to stay open.

Here’s what I was looking for:

Their vaccine has some big advantages, because it is fridge-stable so easily transported and used anywhere in the world. It is also substantially cheaper, at about £3 a dose instead of more than £20 for the others.”

A pub near my mates was selling bowls of Irish stew with bread for £3.50 - free refils, so you could always have a cheap hearty meal on your table while you get shitfaced. I hope that carries on.

Do people think there will be a microchip in the vaccine? Small enough to fit through a hypodermic needle? Do they know how technology works? :D

i STILL don’t understand why the government would care what I’m doing day to day. I’m sure it would only be to sell it to Google to flog me a mattress or something
 
Reading accounts on another forum I post on (quite a small nerdy one) from a few people who've caught this thing and are suffering the "long covid" that some of my more dismissive friends think are "just normal viral fatigue". I don't know if nerds are particularly susceptible to it or something (maybe lack of sunlight / vitamin D?) but they all seem to get the long and horrible one there. Descriptions include falling over in the street while completely sober, hot and cold night shivers, weight loss, lack of appetite, fever dreams and hallucinations, eyes hurting, feelings of a half-connected brain....

And people would rather risk THAT than the vanishingly small risk from a carefully developed vaccine that has gone through stringent testing? Or whatever tinfoil hatshittery they are coming up with now? I just don't get it. I do not want that kind of horror, or worse, passing it on to people I love. Basically, once done with the vulnerable and older etc, stick it in me asap.
