South Korea constantly tested a lot of people very early on and detected clusters as soon as they were developing, not allowing the virus to spread. There's also something to be said about COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY in some Asian cultures that makes people take these things seriously for the benefit of others and not just their personal safety, which extends to things like wearing masks all the time, respecting personal spaces etc.

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and it was a fucking riot - people with three kids running up and down the aisles, people brushing past you so they could get to the CEREALS and then meekly apologising, people gathering at the end of aisles or choosing to walk down your aisle, proceeding to touch every single packet with their bare hands then moving on etc. The 'fuck you got mine' mentality is going to kill us all in the West!

health may not be amongst the union priorities but this crisis has already gone way beyond that and the union has proven to be pretty useless in reacting. i'd love for this pandemic to bridge countries closer but a rich/poor or north/south or west/east rift seems more likely at this point.

I wasn’t implying you were one of those, love.

The thing is it’s not about priorities, this crisis makes health systems a priority, it just isn’t within the EU’s powers. The EU can’t decide anything, it’s up to the local governments.

to be honest, hasn't that always been the case? sure we've been able to move around freely since Schengen but fault lines of cultural prejudice and economic discrepancy have always been deep
 
It saddens me when the countries withing the EU can’t be more coordinates, but it is exactly because the union itself doesn’t have the mandate to micromanage the nationstates.

To me it’s just obvious that the EU needs to have more power.
 
On the other hand; they usually say that each crisis has strengethened the union in the past, but right now it hasn’t even recovered from the eurocrisis.

i know you weren't, just pointing out not every criticism of the eu is from people who disapprove of it.

and i'm not saying the eu can/should intervene in state health care systems - it has flopped in coming up with economic actions.

totally this. and it's totally my experience in supermarkets, or even when going for a walk round the block. plenty of people don't give a shit. and it's interesting in light of all the people pointing out that the UK govt is trying to shift responsibility away from themselves and onto us as individuals. that's all true, but it's the culture of selfishness/stupidity here that's also the problem.

So on Wednesday night she took a turn for the worse and gave her two hours(!?) to improve before they turn off the ventilator, he didn't get a phone call but did earlier. Last night she opened her eyes briefly and he's clinging on to hope that she's fighting.

It has been a political tactic of successive Tory Governments, starting with fucking Thatcher, to diminish the idea and importance of society and community and we are reaping the consequences now.
 
I think generally people going for a walk have been quite courteous around here. Save the odd jogger, most people have been giving each other a wide berth.

But supermarkets are indeed a different kettle of fish.
 
It's impossible to do social distancing in a supermarket. The main thing that caused this for me today and on Tuesday was the staff who were parking big multilayer trolleys of stuff for stocking the shelves right in the middle of the aisle so you couldn't see around it - cue people bumping into each other trying to walk round it. Also, people with trolleys just banging around the place as if nothing was up.

Yeah the closest shops to me are quite small anyway but there's always about five staff members milling about with trolleys blocking corners etc, so you can't socially distance yourself from them let alone the other customers.

Sainsbury sent an email yesterday saying the now they’re encouraging adults from the same household not to go shopping together, leaving one person to do it (and hopefully stay home with any kids if possible). That should be the case ALL year round in my eyes. Too many massive families running around arguing in supermarkets, taking up space. Especially ones with loads of kids.
 
Good god, I see the UK has overtaken China for deaths now as well. :(

Most Icelanders are being very considerate and keeping their distance from each other. Most places are closed anyway.

On a darker note we have nearly 1400 cases now which is ridiculous highly per capita.
 
Still not a massive leap up though, is it? Weren’t we expecting it to double in 3 days originally? It’s only up about 100 in two days? Which means things are (seemingly) working.

The trajectory has slowed. The BBC has said it was now likely that doubling would be in 3.5 days. That means it seems likely that it’s working. It needs more than a couple of days, though, granted.

(And cases are down...but that’s not that reliable as we’re hardly testing)
 
Walkers are WORSE. They're just not as easy for other walkers to notice because they're busy dandering slowly along on their phones.

My 7 days of self isolation are over but I've taken a turn for the worse. Got some chest pain & shortness of breath. Pray for me Moopy.
 
Oh, get well soon Suedey. One of my work pals had a similar experience - she was getting better and then it just hit her again. Her fever finally broke on Tuesday after 9 days and she's now out of isolation.

TBH am a lot worried EU will fall apart once this is over, but perhaps falling apart is the only way to create a more substantial union that will be beyond national interests prides and banners.
