This morning's paper's are doing some quite serious sabre-rattling over the government's multiple failings over PPE and ventilators. Hancock being pictured next to these stories with his usual facial expression i.e. looking about as comfortable as Peter Andre on Mastermind.
 
The senior civil servant who said that the government were briefed on the EU ventilator scheme and made a political decision to reject it has now clarified that the government were not briefed on the EU ventilator scheme and did not make a political decision to reject it.



Easy mistake to make I guess.

Fuck my hat, they actually think we're all stupid.

Or, more accurately, they've twigged that their own voter base is stupid and are taking the piss out of the rest of us.
 
I know it’s a minor issue, but I hate how this ”non-quarantine yet not much to do” situation that we have here makes people think that since you have nothing better to do that you should join them for lunch or dinner or home parties and the likes. I don’t know how it is possible but I’ve been more busy and stressed out than usual when things are ”normal busy”.

Sadly I highly doubt anybody outside of Twitter ACTUALLY CARES, Boris' massive voter base certainly won't.

Almost amazed we haven't seen UK protests against a LETHAL AND HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS VIRUS following the shit show of the USA.

do you know anyone who's had it? i see cases and deaths are going up... is the healthcare system still not under pressure?

i see russia is spiking in new cases as well. 5k in a day so far.

I know of friends or relatives of friends but no one I know personally that have tested positive but a lot of people suspect that they’ve had it.

Deaths are still going up and the system is under pressure but from what I understand it still haven’t reached max capacity.

The FT are sticking by their actual deaths figure of 41,000 thus far. I know I said that the government were massaging the figures so that they didn't have to give a daily figure over 1000 but even I didn't expect an actual figure of that size. That well under half of the "official" figure.
 
What is the FT figure and how are they calculating it? I guess it includes care home deaths/deaths at home?

from their analysis they’ve come to a conservative estimate of 41,102 by april 21st...
 
i think this has answered my questions on immunity most comprehensively so far (spoiler alert: no one knows anything yet). from this ap article.

WHO’S IMMUNE?

Doctors assume people who had COVID-19 will have some immunity against a repeat infection. But they don’t know how much protection or how long it will last.

Another key question: Do people who survive a severe infection have stronger immunity than those who had mild symptoms — or those who had no obvious symptoms at all?

To tell, scientists are rolling out blood tests that look for antibodies, proteins that the immune system makes to fight off infection. They don’t detect active infection like the tests needed for the currently sick. They’re intended to tell who already was infected whether they knew it or not — including those who had few or no symptoms and those who were sick but couldn’t get a diagnostic test.

As they test more people, researchers will look for the level of antibodies that seems to be the key threshold for protection. They’re also trying to tell if having certain types of antibodies are more critical than an overall count.

“How long is the protection — one month, three months, six months, a year?” Fauci said. “We need to be humble and modest that we don’t know everything.”

Anyone notice everyone starting to get a bit lax on the lockdown rules? Just walked to the shop and noticed loads of people hanging out in the park, chatting over fences, hanging out on benches. My friend even told me she sneaked our for a shag the other day. It must be the hot weather. I think they’re going to find it very difficult keeping this going beyond another two weeks.
 
Oh it's definitely the same her, more people in the streets in general. And it's going to be very hard to keep lockdown the way it is right now now that May 11th has been announced as provisional date for the end of lockdown.
 
Lockdown isn't going to just END and things will be back to normal. It's going to be gradual, and things like pubs and clubs are going to be the LAST thing to open. I think any large gatherings will be banned until 2021... this is the new normal.
 
Oh I think everyone’s aware of that, but it seems increasingly the public are dictating what’s acceptable rather than government. I see loads of people meeting up for walks in the park. They keep a distance but it’s still not technically allowed.
 
Yes, it’s far busier out there. Much more cars on the roads than before. But I guess the nice weather isn’t helping people stay inside.
 
I must say I have been following all rules, and will continue to do so. I am not usually a stickler for rules, but as much as I have “got used” to this being bizarrely normal it is all still horrendously scary.
 
People can drive to the country now for exercise and are able to go out more than once a day, right?
 
I think people just need to see other people now.

Either you live alone, and will drive yourself to insanity, or you live with someone else who will do it for you.
 
I was in Aldi earlier. An overweight old couple, clearly Brexit arseholes, started walking right at me. I just said "SOCIAL DISTANCING" and they rolled their eyes and moved out the way.

The husband then seemed to follow me around muttering DON'T FORGET SOCIAL DISTANCING whenever I moved. Eventually I replied "well its pretty tough when you're everywhere I go"

He mustered a lifetime of unused wit and told me to SHUT UP.

I have been fine generally, but I've run into a couple of people I know whilst out and about and had brief chats with them, and that's really brought home how much I miss other people.
 
Given that the Scottish Government were talking about everyone wearing a mask or scarf when they go out as part of their future plans, I think they realise people are going to be less adherent to social distancing when the lockdown restrictions are lifted.

I imagine the policy will be the same across the UK.
