And it looks like Boris is about to follow suit for the north of England at least? But is he going even further by shutting gyms as well?
 
In their defence the rates of transmission in London are about a tenth of what they are in Manchester.
 
It's not exactly like London is a big vote winner for the government - if anything they're targeting the north, so I'm not sure it's politically motivated
 
I went into central London on Tuesday and it was absolutely dead. It was actually quite sad. Even at lunchtime, there was hardly anyone about.

Surely because no-one goes there other than to work? People are spending a lot more time in their immediate neighbourhoods and the surrounding area and going to cafes / pubs there.
 
The infection rate is much lower in London, but I still think some of that is to do with testing?

I think they're also looking at a 'one London' approach, which DOES make sense due to the connectivity across the city and the headache a local lockdown would be to manage, but on the flip it could also be a big pain in the arse.

Yes, quite! I'm sure the pubs and restaurants in central London are suffering more than elsewhere because there's just no-one there to use them

They say "if we don't give you the 'real' notification then don't worry" but that's EASIER SAID when you've been somewhere without ideal ventilation that you know was a bit of a risk, and when you don't really trust the government with their "but muh economy" to decide what constitutes a risky exposure. I want to know when, where, how long, and an estimate of distance because it's worrying the hell out of me :zombie:

You can see on iPhone when your log was checked Settings > Exposure Notifications > Exposure Logging Status > Exposure Checks > View the time stamps

Yeah I've found that and they're all 0 for 'matched key count' (exported the json and checked) so no idea... also it's unclear if those are the times of local key exchange or the times that the latest list of plague carriers was updated :/ I think it may be the latter.

Central London is also usually chock full of tourists, so I can’t imagine many people are doing a city break here at the moment.

I’ve got a week off next week and have booked for a couple of films at the Prince Charles Cinema so will see for myself. Oddly the most quiet I’ve ever seen that area before was day one of the 2012 Olympics.

It's absolutely to do with testing.

The ONS random surveys have London as behind the north east and north west, but not that far off Yorkshire and way ahead of the midlands. They're sticking their head in the sand and pretending it's not a problem.

Central London (the core zone 1 area) may be dead but I cycle across South London often and I can tell you Southwark, Brixton, Streatham, Tooting, Greenwich, Deptford and the rest are ANYTHING BUT! The traffic is insane, worse than it ever was, everyone is out and about, cafés and shops are packed, queues to get into Sainsbury's, etc. I rarely go out in the evenings so I don't know if that translates onto pubs then but I'd be shocked if it didn't.

That's pretty much what I see too. Going out in Soho is bizarre. Compton Street is quite busy but the second you come off that road, it's like a ghosttown. I walked across an empty Leicester Square last week at 7pm in the evening!

Naturally the denier crowd are playing this as "ONLY three times as many, so what's the fuss about" - forgetting that if it wasn't for the fuss, it'd have been a lot more than 3x...

They were the ones with the “stat” that Flu kills more. Give them them the figures and they’ll twist it again. And on it goes...

Also what’s the reach for covid? About 8% of the population so far? Three times as many seems high for something that’s only reached 8% of the population. But I’m no statistician :basil:
 
they are estimating the reach to be 2,2% here so far

herd immunity is only a million waves off, yay!
 
I don't know if that's good or bad. I'd quite like to find I have antibodies as then I can say "oh thank GOD, I've had it, didn't notice it, and my dad didn't cop it" and feel safe in doing everything that's legally permissible. But the antibodies only last a few months anyway and then it's down to the memory T cell things that we can't seem to test for easily.
 
You can have it and produce antibodies if your primary immune response is enough to contain the virus.
 
So my boss tested positive today, which means I probably have it. :zombie:

I am a bit IRATE because he went out of state for vacation, took a rapid test the day he returned (and flew on an airplane), which was negative, and immediately came back to the office against our protocol that you have to quarantine for two weeks after an out of state trip. Of course he tested negative the day he came back as it doesn't manifest for several days. He took a second test yesterday that was positive. It just makes me upset that there seems to be different rules depending on SENIORITY

I really wish I wasn't in work. It's stupid. My productivity is WAY down because I'm spending all the time doomscrolling thanks to the massive anxiety that comes from being in the office. Because they think we're less productive at home. Argh!
 
despite being symptom free when I got my positive result i'm now coming down with a really heavy cold / snotty nose etc. hope my taste or smell don't desert me or I won't be able to COPE

We lost our sense of smell and taste in March. We noticed while we were eating a NICE JUICY STEAK. It's very disconcerting. Came back though. :)

I’m pretty sure blocked and/or snotty noses have been mostly ruled out as a symptom, if that makes you feel any better!

I know it’s tremendously selfish but I do hope this imminent lockdown doesn’t affect my new kitchen. I couldn’t cope with the flat the way it is right now (destroyed)

Having just had a terrible night’s sleep AGAIN after being woken up by students continually and twice having to go down and complain because separate larger than six groups had music on on the common in front of my flat, I have to agree. Part of the problem is the fact they literally have nowhere to go to socialise but also that the university itself is doing absolutely nothing whatsoever, despite being in the local press saying they will be clamping down.

My boss got a new flat in March and had building work done throughout April and May with no issues.
