Probably a positive step but it would have been nice if they'd wheeled out any science of when people are most infectious to back this up.
 
Scotland moving beyond Level 0 from 9th August so most restrictions will go however;
  • Mask wearing in indoor public spaces will still be mandated by law (including schools!)
  • Home working still recommended. Employers asked to consider a hybrid model of office/home working where possible.
  • Travel restrictions will be implemented if and when required.
 
The BBC reports both the number of alerts and check ins declined sharply in the last week of July.

The number of NHS Covid-19 app alerts fell significantly in England and Wales in the last week of July, official statistics show.

Nearly 396,000 people were pinged, compared with the previous week's record of 690,129, a fall of 43%.

The big fall in alerts doesn't include the impact of changes to the app intended to reduce the number of contacts advised to self-isolate following a close contact with a positive case.

An update released earlier this week means the app will look for contacts two days prior, rather than five, when someone without symptoms tests positive.

The number of check-ins to venues using the app also saw a large decline.

In the week ending 28 July there were 2.4 million check-ins in England and Wales, down from 6.8m the week before - a drop of 65%.

The total number of downloads of the app also increased more slowly compared with the previous week.

I've deleted the app now. Eaten out the last three days and haven't been asked to check in at any of the places, either.
 
Perhaps they aren't. It's a few weeks since I was asked, thinking about it. But my default mode until I had the alert the second time was to check in whether I was asked or not, even when people I was with weren't bothering.
 
Got a girl on my Facebook who I met in Ibiza, she moved back to look after her ill Dad. Like many from Ibiza, weirdly, she's been very anti vaccine.

She's caught covid and now so has her Dad, and it looks like he's going to die from it, and yet she's still antivax. It's all so terribly sad and pointless.
 
I believe people should have the choice but when you're caring for someone ill surely you err on the side of caution?!
 
I've got some mates who are a couple who didn't have it, and are now expecting, and are petrified of catching covid while pregnant, which is even more bizarre.
 
Did they refuse it because of the belief of it affecting fertility?
 
I know a girl in her mid 30’s who is trying for a baby and won’t get the vaccination due to some warped logic that it would be born disabled?
 
It does seem to have all gone quiet on the Covid front at the moment. I am intrigued to see if it all goes a bit Pete Tong again when the kids return to school here next week.

I remember asking a while back if we thought it would be another Christmas full of restrictions and the overwhelming response was yes. Do we still feel the same? I am feeling strangely optimistic about it all now. Not sure if it is because I have been double jabbed now and the constant worry that I might die seems to have lifted.
 
I feel more optimistic than I did a few weeks ago. Probably because Freedom Day doesn't seem to have had the catastrophic impact some feared.
 
As much as I hate to be a downer, cases do appear to be slightly flicking upwards again. But fingers crossed that's just a blip or a gentle rise, rather than the start of a peak like we've seen before.

It does seem to be a gentle levelling off rather than a huge rise. And the daily numbers have gone down for the last 3 consecutive days too so it’s definitely not skyrocketing.
 
We're now in the midst of the impact to deaths and hospitalisations on the back of the surge 3 weeks ago, and while deaths have doubled, they've doubled from a low base (~50 to ~100 a day). Still too many but way, way off previous surges. And hospitalisations are actually still gradually going down.

The downside is likely to be that hospitalisations and deaths will plateau for a bit the way cases have. But the upside to always remember is the number of people who are immunised (either through vaccination or from catching it and recovering during the surge) is getting bigger every day, tens of thousands a day over the past few weeks.

This comes from the same school of pseudo-scientific charlatanry as "vaccinations cause autism!1"
 
I wonder what the daily figures would look like if Freedom Day had been delayed a month?
 
Are figures quite high? I have not checked them in a couple of weeks. I used to check them DAILY.

There is a quite reasonable statistician I saw on Twitter who modelled it and said that delaying it would probably have led to more deaths in Autumn
 
It does feel pretty normal now. Things are happening, everyone's out and about, and I'm not hearing much now in the way of "soandso is bad with it" or "wotsit died"

A "background noise" of around 20-40k cases per day and 50-100 deaths seems like it's here to stay.
 
And they should start with the boosters soon enough. My GP emailed the other day saying that flu vaccine appointments were available.
 
I'm off for a PCR this morning as got the TROTS on Saturday, have been a bit OFF since and the last two days have launched into the most HORRENDOUS cold, including losing my taste and smell last night.

I don't THINK it's Covid- I've had negative lateral flows every day, no fever, and my cough is PHLEGMY (sorry) but if it is, I think I might just give up on this summer ENTIRELY because it's been ENTIRELY FUCKING RUINED so far.
 
Hopefully it's just a cold, we've all had a horrible cold the past two weeks, seems to be going round
 
I figure it is too and I'm praying so- because I can't face isolation AGAIN. It destroyed me enough last time.

I really could do with a fucking BREAK right now. The past month has been one thing after the other.
 
I'm beginning to hear more and more cases of people coming down with non-covid illnesses, bugs, colds etc. I myself have had the odd sore throat (and tested negative). In a way I think our bodies are just reacting a bit stronger to ailments as they've had the last 18 months off :D

Yes our immune systems have had pretty much no practice recently and are now encountering a whole world of bugs.
 
Yes, I've noticed feeling just a bit ICKY a few times over the last two weeks. Waking up in the morning just not feeling quite right - mainly sure throat and a bit phelgmy, only to largely forget about it in a few hours. I've done a few negative lateral flows and just put it down to lots more bugs and germs circulating out there, and my body remembering what to do when confronted with them.
