Oh, bless him!

Anyway it seems from early results that Labour did well in older-trending areas and underperformed in areas with younger populations, which tracks with Starmer’s obsession with winning over Tory-leaning voters and the general disillusion it’s inspired from progressives.

It’ll likely win him the next election but it doesn’t strike as the best long-term strategy…

Nowhere near the drubbing we wanted but, yes, locals and locals and can, rightly I suppose, be heavily impacted by what goes on in the region.

Not sure how I feel about the Lib Dems making a bit of a comeback.

The last election was 2019 though, where Labour were already eating into the urban centres, led by (a then unpopular) Corbyn.

Why target those who are going to vote for you anyway? He's doing tremendously well, if making himself look like a terrible cunt, but such is the field he's playing.

The Lib Dem success is a bit of a surprise. But I reckon they're picking up votes from reluctant Tories.

Yes I've always felt Labour's problem in the last few elections was that they seemed to only be able to reach people who were going to vote for them anyway, increasing their London lead without infiltrating other areas enough. A double punch of the Conservatives being utterly shit and Labour saying the things the more conservative majority want to hear (hi) can only be a good thing for them - I can't see the Conservatives getting back in power for a decade at least.

The only thing that will change the result next year is Sunak's relative popularity, but he is just so very out of touch.

Not long term. Every election the young people (and that's probably 40 and under) they are pissing off become a larger proportion of the electorate, and you just need to look at Scotland for what happens to a Labour party that takes their voters for granted

I guess, I'll stick to what I've said all along, that Labour will be able to control the narrative once in power and won't need pander so much.

I suppose so, but it would need a left-leaning party with the pull of the SNP to crop up in the rest of the UK for that to happen. I can't see the Lib Dems or Greens making that kind of headway in the next 10 years, though perhaps enough for a coalition government. More likely would be the left of Labour splitting into a new party. There's also the possibility of an uprising within the party at some point where Kier is ousted in favour of someone less centrist

I'm clinging to this as well. As I've said before, I'll take a dickhead leader with a strong cabinet and progressive backbenchers over the blanket of cunts we have right now.

Bristol didn't vote so I haven't got too excited, but as I've said before, we're a lovely little red island at national level, surrounded by a sea of shit. Locally we're majority Green.

But the surrounding councils are all voting, and the Tories have already lost control of South Gloucestershire, with North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset still counting but Tory councillor losses reported :disco:

I know, I’ve been singing from that hymn sheet for three years. :D

Clearly it's working for now, but Zen is right that the old adage about people drifting rightwards as they age doesn't seem to be holding as much for the Millennial set. It's the same in America.

Also the age old problem of progressive splits vs conservatives basically being the only significant right-wing party. Right now the Tories are in the doldrums, but I feel like they're only ever as weak as their current leader. Those red and blue wall voters who are disillusioned with them now could very easily be won back. Younger voters, not so much. There's already been a few seats this election that Conservatives have held because of a surge for the Greens cutting into Labour's lead.

Tories 'almost completely wiped out' of Bath and North East Somerset (Rees-Moggland), with Labour now the opposition to the Lib Dems.

The Lib Dem in Rees-Mogg's home ward got 75% of the vote :D

I’m still really frustrated about the timing of the Tory government cycle. We have another year to wait before the GE and I just feel anger will have tempered by then. They’ll still lose but I feel like the Tory strongholds and the strategic moves of putting people like Boris in safe seats will will survive. If the election had been this year most of them would have been wiped out.

Separately, I’m never sure if the local elections are a good indicator anyway; the ‘surprising’ performance of the Lib Dems is not that surprising because surely people are more likely to vote tactically in locals and right now the movement is anyone but Tory. So if that means LD or Green, so be it. The GE would be a better indicator of a National mood.

Absolutely loving the Tory attempts to downplay this on the news this morning.

It is hilarious. Sunak's "we're making progress in “key election battlegrounds” like Peterborough, Sandwell and Bassetlaw"

Peterborough: up 1 from 8 to 9, only a third of seats contested. NOC.
Sandwell: up 2 from 10 to 12, only a third of seats contested, still a massive labour majority.
Bassetlaw: up 4 from 4 to 8, still a massive labour majority.

If celebrating 7 new councillors is all you've got, then things ain't going well for you.

Oh I saw him on the news the other day banging on about "Woke-on-Trent", what a bellend.

Three ward results in for me so far:

CON gain from IND
LAB gain from GRN
LAB gain from GRN

Well that's a bit of fun. ALL CHANGE!

Plymouth was NOC with Conservatives as the largest party. Only 19 of the seats were being contested at this election, but Labour won 15 of them and the Tories not a single one, making it now a Labour majority.

Ooh, now I'm turned on.
