Cuties (and Netflix controversy)

Well this film has caused quite the stir. It's supposedly very good (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), and deals in part with the premature sexualisation of young girls.

It's currently the subject of a strident CANCEL NETFLIX!!!1 campaign mainly over the poster on the right which in isolation does look dodgy and which the head of Netflix has apologised to the director for.

I am intrigued.

Honestly, if it's a film about the sexualisation of young girls, then the marketing should reflect that really. The French poster looks much more tasteful, but it also looks like a wholesome kid's film, so you'd probably still get a backlash there, for mislabelling it.

I also think it's probably getting a lot more attention than a French film by a first time director would get with a tasteful (and unrepresentative) ad campaign.

Watched it tonight and thought it was great!

I found the sexualised sections very uncomfortable to watch, but it is THE WHOLE POINT

Superb acting and a fantastic ending. #DontCancelNetflix

I read somewhere today it's caused a spike in cancellations. Obviously people who have not watched it, read anything about it, and I imagine probably had forgotten they even had a Netflix account.

My female friend wanted to turn it off at a couple of points and I think wishes she hadn't watched it all. I can imagine it's a different experience watching it from a female point of view.

The part I struggled with is just the fact that there are those who will be aroused by it. But ultimately, I think how some sick people might react to or misuse art isn't reason enough for it not to exist. Friend disagrees.

Saw it last week and thought it was pretty good. Some of the dancing scenes do veer into the realms of discomfort, but that's kind of the point, even if it does feel like it is sometimes portraying exactly that which it is criticising. The scene from the US poster is actually one of the most unpleasant scenes in the film and is hardly saying phwoar, looks at these lovelies twerking. The strict religious home life vs "liberated" (or is it?) school life stuff storyline is good and the lead gives one excellent performance

And that final shot is quite fabulous!

i have no interest in watching this but it seems to have provoked discussion.

don't know much about the subject i thought this was a really interesting read that presented information that looks legit that i never knew/thought of:

but if you are more outraged by the movie as such rather than the subject it (in my opinion in a very ott manner) handles... gurl
