I see the comparison, but have you heard the Shine album (full Japan-only version as opposed to EP)? It is VERY much in that same sound to me. I would suggest that next for you if you haven't heard and want to do a bit of a Cyndi journey.

"Rain on Me" is a lovely laid back moment after a quintessential dance and "modern" pop album. Very pretty.
 
I'll do the bonus tracks because frankly this album feels over too soon :D I've really enjoyed it and not sure why I forgot about it.

Rain On Me, much like Grab a Hold, is silky smooth melancholy gorgeousness. I like her voice more when she irons out some of the quirks and goes for good old EMOTION.

I think having both Rocking Chair and Lyfe early on the album interrupts the flow. I don’t dislike them but don’t feel they’re needed, though at the time of course she wasn’t going to cut a track she did with Basement Jaxx.
 
I find "Lyfe" and "Rocking Chair" a lot more charming these days, but I agree that they feel like they'd fit more before "Grab a Hold" if they were going to make the final cut. "Lyfe" probably could have been cut just because it sounds so out of place/budget and the chorus brings it down.
 
"Got Candy" is fun, could have been beefed up a bit more but solid chorus. 7/10
 
"Can't Breathe" is probably my favorite ballad over "Rain on Me" by a hair, but obviously meant for a different album so fine as a bonus track. It's so intimate sounding.

9/10
 
I can understand the decision not to have an outright ballad on the album but again Can't Breathe is really quite gorgeous and I wouldn't have been mad about it at all.

The fact that this was her last album full of original material is quite shocking. She gave us so much right up until the end of the 00s and then seemed content on doing the standards (or maybe her label's initiative ?). A shame.

Overall, this all needs more listens basically. I'm going to listen to the album on my run tomorrow and I think thats what will push it over the top
 
Thanks for joining everyone , this was a pleasure. I've really only consistently played "Into the Nightlife", "Echo", and "Rain on Me"/"Can't Breathe" here and there, the past decade. It reminded me of quite a few gems.

Body Acoustic was because the label wanted a covers record next so she decided to cover herself.

The last two, I don’t know but imagine Memphis Blues was a contractual obligation for that record and Detours (which isn’t bad) was done because although niche MB did comparatively well.

I don't think I ever bothered with the last two albums. Maybe I'll try Detours if it's worth a listen. Her voice does lend itself well to that kind of sound, I think.

Probably a bit unfair to include a covers project and acoustic GH so to speak but they were not really my bag. I love everything else to varying degrees. And like I said, I have not heard the past two albums or the Christmas album.

Yeah I thought it would be dreadful but it’s a decent listen even if I don’t think you’ll be playing it to death. Here is Hard Candy Christmas from it:

Ooh I quite like that, I was expecting the country project to be more on the KITSCHY side so this shows some promise
 
Into The Nightlife is a bunsen burner of a chorus. The "that's ASDA price" pocket slapping beats are an absolute horror, but stubborn Cyndi is a law unto herself :D

I'll do a listen later, then read the comments, which I'm looking forward to just as much.

Well I’m not going to say there’s none of that but it’s interspersed here and there rather than constant.
 
Cyndi's Flat Beat nod to Mr Oizo, flourished with bits left over from Dannii's You Won't Forget About Me (and what a shame they did) is a cool breeze of minimalism and needs a slight trimming down to work better as an opener. Great with headphones.
 
The real side opener is Into The Night Life. When the chorus hits it's the same conga line she produced in the 80s, except she has no business directing a video without ideas nevermind a budget.
 
I genuinely feel this video held back what was her best commercial catapult since the unnecessary Hey Now (which I'm admittedly grateful for as it at least gave her a 90s bookmark). Her UK team should have poured their efforts into securing Rain On Me having a radio 2 presence the second this video went online. Anyway, the chorus and judicious middle 8 are Cyndi without limits. She fucking soars.
