Cyndi Lauper - Change of Heart

This is consistently in my Cyndi all time top 3, and I can't help but feel it is criminally underrated or just perhaps forgotten, but to me it captures the energy that has made her one of my favorite pop performers of all time.

She was already starting to decline internationally but it was reasonably big hit in the States (#3 US, #67 UK) off the heels of "True Colors". She filmed the (admittedly lackluster) video in the UK, and did a fair amount of promo there. But it didn't seem to connect at all in Europe, aside from France where it went top ten. She would go top ten again in the UK with "I Drove All Night" and "Hey Now".

I love it, you really go on a journey with her. Her range is fantastic, so tender, excruciating and fully committed. I think it was maybe just thuds and loudness for some. Maybe a more glamorously shot video (featuring The Bangles and Niles maybe) would have eased some in. I've no idea though as She Bop and All Through The Night inexplicably hit the danger zone too.

Oh Change of Heart. Well I’ve liked it more over time and I know it’s popular in Cyndidom but I have to be honest it’s not one of my faves. I can see why it didn’t do as well in the UK, but definitely deserved better than it’s final position. I do like the verses and the music. It doesn’t quite get there with the chorus. Also I think the video performance and look (along with the hyper energetic performances of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun) harmed her in the long run and took away from her as an artist and made her almost a novelty act for some who didn’t explore more.

Too young to remember that time. My oldest sister was the one I discovered the early Cyndi Lauper records through. I’m pretty sure this was a US thing that maybe was mentioned in magazines here. The 80s were pretty much still World Of Sport with Dickie Davies on Saturdays featuring the UK wrestling scene i.e Big Daddy versus Giant Haystacks.

It was mentioned in the press but US wrestling wasn’t a thing here at all until Sky came in the late 80s/ early 90s I think. So it didn’t mean much at all.
