Following the SHOCK revelations that dmlaw thinks it's SHIT and Funky kinda rates it (i.e. just loves wrapping himself up in a feather boa and miming to it in his bedroom), I felt we needed a POLL on this slightly, but too tarnished CLASSIC....

It's FUCKING MAJESTIC, no doubt about it but not my favourite ABBA song so it'll have to settle for a 10/10
 
I know there's marginally better ABBA stuff out there, but I really think this deserves a 11/10. No amount of mobile DJs can make this classic shine any less.

It's not my favourite ABBA song, it's probably just outside my top 10 actually but it takes a HEART OF STONE not to recognise that it is one hell of a song.
 
I don't think any song proves why pop music is essential as well as Dancing Queen does

Your boyfriend might have dumped you, your mum might be dead and you may have just been diagnosed with cancer, but DQ is the song that might just lift your spirits enough to DANCE AROUND YOUR BEDROOM and remember why LIFE IS fundamentally FABULOUS :disco: :disco: :disco:
 
It's a FORCE to be reckoned with as far as songs go. It's the one that will be remembered in 100 years.
 
I can totally understand why the overexposure has caused people to dislike it, but it remains an absolutely towering masterpiece of pop joy. I can totally understand why Frida started crying when she first heard the backing track. It's like a gay epiphany.
 
I'm not sure I should allow myself to rate it

for me it's a 5, but I know deep down, and removing myself from the equation, it's more of a 9 or 10

but nobody else is objective on moopy so I'm not sure why I SHOULD BE!
 
The lyrics really are spectacularly beautiful and life affirming. More 'real' than most songwriters could ever hope to achieve. And that's before we even talk about the strings, the melody and the piano. Just iconic.
 
And the beauty of it is that EVERYONE has had their Dancing Queen moment in life

Where you are just dancing your cares away feeling FAB, knowing that at that moment you are a TRUE QOL!

There's just SO many glorious moments in the song... Be it the almost breathy vocals "... and the music's high..." or the fact the chorus always seems like a vocal fight between Ag and Frida and everyone's a winner.

Even as the song fades out there's a sneaky little treat with a jaunty piano move and the strings relaunch for one last blast.

SPECTACULAR.
 
These 6 or 7 SPASTICS had better justify themselves and face the WRATH like REAL GAY MEN.
 
I am a bit jaded with it if I'm honest, so can't give it more than a 7.

Probably my second least favourite ABBA #1

I've been listening to it CONTINUOUSLY since SEVENTY SIX and it's still a JOY every time
 
Amazing. I'll never tire of it. Yes, they did better but that first euphoric "You can dance" sends shivers up my spine...
 
This seems to get wheeled out at every wedding party around the world. I would'nt say i'm a particularly big Abba fan, but I enjoy some of their music. A solid 9 from me.
 
Where was the last international wedding you attended? Was'nt it Cleopatra and Julius Caesar?

Like VoR says, I find it completely understandable why Frida cried TEARS OF DISCO JOY when she first heard the backing track. It's just complete EUPHORIA for me, particularly (if you can isolate one element only) the ascending piano and strings that back and follow the 'having the time of your life' line at the end of the chorus. I STILL get chills when I listen to it properly.

And although I could choose better Agnetha and Frida solo vocals, the effect of both of them on this, and the way their vocals weave in and out of each other is orgasmic.
 
It really sounds like a vocal fight... like they're scrabbling over who gets lead at any given second. Their vocals together just soar to arrive at inexplicably amazing places.

It's true neither vocal is sensational by either of their standards, but they're having fun.

Sexy fun in places. Sadly Auntie Frida does sexy better vocally.

Frida's voice is just a lot more versatile, in my opinion. At least in the context of Abba songs, in any case. On 'Wrap Your Arms Around Me' Agnetha managed to sound sexier than on anything B&B asked her to do.

i don't hate it but i defenitly wouldn't choose to listen to it and i'm fine if i never listen to it again, it's kind of just there.

i don't want to rate Take a Chance On Me because i really dislike it.
 
I'm not going to rate it because I don't think I can be objective. The level of overplaying and wheeling out at wedding receptions makes it impossible for me not to see it as fake and tacky. I'd love to hear it again for the first time, because I'm sure it actually is a good piece of music and I feel very slightly bad about hating it as much as I do.
