Moopy I have a question.

I've been a manager for over a year now looking after a team of 15. I've never wanted to be a manager and I hate responsibility.

There's a lot to my job and a lot of organising which I'm usually ok with.

But in the last 6 months I've found it all very overwhelming. I find myself working from home. Checking emails on my days off. Trying to plan my week after time off.

I've never been one to think "ooh I must have a mental health problem". But I feel like my work is taking over my life.

Apart from copious amounts of alcohol, how do you all deal with stress?

Serious answer: I had psychotherapy and we developed some exercises but they were tailored to what I responded to in earlier sessions and we patched things that didn't. So water-based things were good for me so they involved rivers, beaches, the sea etc.

I have a "Live Love Laugh" cushion. Every night, I punch fuck out of it for 15-20 minutes.
I can try that!

I don't think I need therapy. Yet. Everyone I work with tells me I've got anxiety but I think it's just general adult/work/life stress. I just don't handle it very well.

I would suggest to leave your work mobile/laptop at work, so then you won’t be tempted to check anything whilst at home. If anyone is contacting you on your personal mobile then direct them to your work mobile phone and tell them you will get back to them within working hours.

I don't have a work mobile and every single one of my team has my personal number :(

I need to delete my emails which people have told me for ages but then I worry about what I'll come back to. At least if I check them daily I know what to expect.

I'm not helping myself I realise.

Get a work mobile darling. If anyone is phoning you on your personal number then direct them to your work mobile. You need to learn to treat your work and home life separately as it really is not healthy for them to merge in to one. In regards to work emails- leave them at work. No one can have a go at you for missing an email if you have been on holiday, or if it’s the weekend.

True. I can handle the being contacted our of work thing usually. It's more the day to day workload and trying to fit everything in when we are short staffed and covering sickness etc.

Rachey you are only employed by the company for so many hours per week. If problems arise out with working hours it is not your problem darling. Your mental health and well being is so much more important than your work. Please request a work mobile, and put a memo out to all staff that they must contact you on that from now on.

Yup. I manage a smaller team than Rachey but I won't deal with anything out of hours. They can sit on it.

I have thought about getting a work mobile. It would make life easier.

Watching World War 2 movies is definitely helping my mental state. I've dreamt we are at war for the last 4 nights :D

What Rita said. Once you start drawing a clearer line between work and home, you ought to start feeling better. I know your colleagues are also your friends but you need to be FIRM with the fuckers on this.

Firm is something I'm not at all good at. But I know I need to try.

If you still don't feel like being a manager, then maybe consider going back to a previous role? It's worth it if it's better for your health.

What sort of thing are they calling or messaging you about, out of work hours? I assume it's hardly LIFE OR DEATH PET SITUATIONS, is it?

I imagine it's more asking you for time off/ cover or switch shifts etc. And that can all fucking wait.

I've discussed this already with my manager. They don't think I'd like stepping down and watching someone else look after the team. But it's my decision I guess. Although financially I'd struggle.

Lolly - so today I've had one of them message because she's on rota tomorrow but has already done her hours and didn't know she was in. So now I've had to contact the other manager to get her to look into it or I'll probably have to go in to cover. They get their rota 8 weeks in advance but never check it until the day before.

Work mobile which is off when you're not getting paid.

Fuck email off outside of work hours.

You're not a CEO or running your own business, you're not getting paid £250k a year. Stop taking on a workload like you do.

I run my own businesses and even I don't have email on my phone. If I'm offline, I'm offline. Deal with it. I honestly can not tell you how much happier and less stressed I am since I did this. Nothing is that important that it needs an answer at 9:45pm

I know. Everyone including moopy has told me this before. I don't help myself.

Got in the lift - 4 people; buttons pressed - 3, 4, 5, 6. Grrr.

Lift stops at Floor 1. Some prick gets in, presses 2.

I could have killed him.

Why didn't she contact the other manager herself? You're not at work.

She did by FB messenger the same as me. But the other manager is working so hasn't had a chance to check messages. Unlike me.

So the manager who IS working hasn't replied. Why does that mean you who isn't has to? IT DOESN'T.

And sorry, but communicating by facebook messenger for work? FUCK OFF :D

Amen. Stop being such a FANNY Rachel - get this shit sorted.

Because you DO reply, they will carry on doing it. I would. And I'd also know I was taking advantage of you, but it's fair enough because you're a sap.

THIS! If you never wanted to be a manager, don’t be a manager!

I never wanted to be a manager, so I don’t be a manager :)
