It’s a very good album, but some of the ballads sag a bit. It’s definitely the blueprint she started with Music Box that she would go onto perfect for Butterfly.

Her '90s holy trinity of Music Box / Daydream / Butterfly remains unmatched I would say in terms of commercial impact.

That being said I think that between Music Box and Daydream there is one excellent album if you combine their high moments, but each on their own has definite saggy moments, so to speak.

I absolutely rinsed this in the mid 90s and looking back is probably my most played Mariah album. But it’s also the one I go back to least - by far - from the big three and I even reference the debut and Emotions more these days.

It has some great moments but overall it’s so gloopy. Her warbling on this one bothers me way more than all the other 90s albums, possibly because she experiments more with retro sounds on this one than the others. She handles all the nostalgia very well, I think it’s the production that’s overplayed. And there’s just too many ballads. The downtempo R&B tracks that preclude the Butterfly era would probably more enjoyable if they weren’t also surrounded by noisy ballads. It’s just all too much.

That interlude might actually just be the greatest thing David Morales has ever done though. It is magnificent.

Commercially, nah. Celine’s big three outpace that easily.

It is, but the Dreamlover remix is his pinnacle. He came close a lot with Mariah, obviously his best muse, but it was his finest hour for me.

I like how different they are. Dreamlover is a pretty faithful remix, but Daydream is like a deconstruction of the original.

What ARE you banging on about? The Dreamlover remix is an entirely different song! She even recorded new vocals for it.

(The edit demonstrates just as good as the full version).

Probably one of her five best albums

Oh I’m getting confused with something else. I haven’t listened to in AGES.

Still think Daydream is better.

Touché but I guess Mimi had the songwriting influence as well but yah in terms of commmercial
Success only the Celine albums deffo outsold Mariah’s

I personally revisit Daydream fairly often but for very specific songs, especially Fantasy, Melt Away, I Am Free, and UTS. I do agree that the ballads are very schmaltzy, but I've never thought that it was necessarily a FLAW in her albums. They're fluffy, but I've always loved them just for being a historical record of her vocal prowess. There's a beautiful pageantry to them that especially still resonates really strongly with her Asian audiences, especially Japanese and Filipino. I might not visit Forever or Open Arms as often but that doesn't mean I consider them 'less important' either.

Anyways, my rate is probably similar to my last one (i think?)

I miss the way record labels used to INCUBATE new talent and invest in their catalog-building. It really felt like there was a body of standards. I think now the barrier to making and releasing music has become so low, there's still great music being made but it's sporadic and dispersed in an endless junkyard of bad music.

That same look in her eyes the whole time is a little disconcerting but this is lovely all the same

She's been like that for a couple of years now.

Not sure how others feel about it, cuz I know it's still contentious, but I'd be curious to know if she'd ever experiment with AI-assisted early vocals. She's been using vocal...technology for decades now. She'd still sing full studio recordings but augment/overlay them with an authorized vocal model, trained by her, in the production process.

CMAT has some very interesting things to say about that kind of vocal technology in her interview with Annie Mac last week.

Very hard to watch her sing these days. We will always have Rotterdam 96.

This was lovely but yeah I think she should have put on some dark shades to go with and the lighting darling should have been adjusted

I vaguely remember the Underneath the Stars Drifting Re-Mix but it was always really obscure. What a gorgeous track. The way my younger self would've pissed my whole family off with it.

Actually, back in the day I successfully indoctrinated my entire family into becoming Mariah stans.

Except my sister, who remains an enemy of the state.

The level of concentration required to stay on melody.

I think I will stick to prancing around on-stage in 1996 ad-libbing over Always Be My Baby like she didn't have a care in the world.
