I couldn’t mention City Pop without the reigning king Gen Hoshino. I had to use a live cut because he has a horrid habit of inserting adverts for his new stuff in the middle of his videos. That’s why you haven’t seen him in ASFM yet.

Anyway, he’s a successful actor too, and this 2017 single “Koi” marked his career peak , being the most downloaded song of 2017 in Japan. It’s a tie-in to a romcom series he starred in (“The Full-time Wife Escapist”), which also included the famous Koi dance you’ll see towards the end. It’s nothing to do with fish though, Koi in this case means Love.

Masaki Suda - Machigai Sagashi

I’m expecting this to flop a bit, but it’s a lovely sentimental ballad from THE most bankable Japanese actor of the moment. His musical output has been a bit hit and miss for me, and his hair has been frankly terrible in all its incarnations, but this 2019 single is his only No.1 to date, and probably best hairdo too.
