I confess I don’t know much about these, and I apologise for the long intro, but this is the best version. They’ve been ticking away for the last 6 years racking up modest hits, but this 2020 single seems to have brought them up to another level in the public consciousness. It helps that it’s written by Aimyon, the biggest female singer-songwriter of the moment.

Have you got subtitles on? These are odd lyrics. But I love it. “The First Take” is a successful web series where famous artists do a one-take rendition of one of their songs, and 85 Million views later, I think this guy nailed it.

Yeah you didn’t get away with it, you’re getting another helping. He’s on a hot streak, riding a wave since 2017’s “Lemon” from 2020’s “Stray Sheep” album. This is a rather singular cut from the same album, soundtracking the anime “Children of the Sea”.

It’s not a pop hit, but it takes me somewhere and makes me a bit weepy sometimes, I’m not sure why. I hope it has some sort of effect on you – at least the video is gorgeous.

Hikaru Utada - Keep Trying

Who wanted Utada doing some more menial everyday tasks? This 2006 single from hit album “Ultra Blue” was one of the first singles to really switch me on to the colossally successful artist – who has 3 albums in the all-time top 10 sellers in Japan.

The video is adorable too. “Ultra Blue” is my personal recommendation of a place to start, but she has switched genres and styles so often that you’ll probably find another foothold if it’s not this. Although I’ve yet to win ASFM so far, take this as a mission statement.
