There aren't a great deal of specifically New Years Eve-themed songs in the modern canon, but I do enjoy this schmaltzfest. Poor Dina did have a very powerful voice. Where IS SHE?

It's not quite up there with Happy New Year or Auld Lang Syne (The New Year's Anthem), but I like it

That DANCE DIVA reincarnation she had when she released Without Love (SONG FOR THE GAYS) really killed her career didn't it.

Not even the Bridget Jones ballad comeback could save her.

Even the BEST new year track by ABBA isn't that amazing (by their standards at least - it's a bit Dickson/ Paige).

As for this... Meh. To follow up the SPLENDID 'Don't Be a Stranger' with this was total MEH.
 
I've become a bit obsessed with this song by poor deaf Dina Carroll. I can't even say I love it but it's a pleasant listen.



I gave the parent album another listen yesterday but apart from this and Escaping it's so dull, unfortunately

True. And I doubt in 2020 that many people want to be reminded of a song called Perfect Year.

Wiki doesn’t provide any further information about Dina’s career since her participation in the “David Gest Is Not Dead Yet” tour back in 2016.

I found a bit of escapism in the optimism of the "perfect year" lyrics!

And that's really not a great credit to have as the last thing she's done!
 
Dina started out with dance, so I don't think she scraped that barrel enough quite frankly :disco:

Did she really go deaf? I'm blaming evil Vernie if so. "No, that perfect year of Disney ballads will be ours I think you'll find".
 
I believe she went deaf in one ear, which was enough to restrict her ability to record and sing live to the best of her ability.

She was no Lisa Stansfield (but then WHO WAS), but her debut album was brilliant and the second and third album had their moments.

I was a massive Dina fan in the day, but the break in her career ruined things for her, which was a shame. She truly had an astonishing live voice.

A note: the album version of Don’t Be A Stranger isn’t a patch on the dramatic, doom-laden string affair of the single.

Some of her best stuff for me was tossed away on bsides or album tracks. She did loads of “club hit only” stuff. Remastering and expanding the big two albums would be magnificent as a result.

They also missed a big trick not releasing a proper, studio version of I Don’t Want To Talk About It as a single- she would rip the shit out of it love during the promo for the first album and it really felt like it could have been a massive hit.
 
I really should investigate her. I only really know Without Love which is decent and Escaping, but even that’s only because I love the original.

I may do a Spotify morning and catch myself up.

Never really liked her. I mean I can't deny the voice, but the material did little for me, Ain't No Man aside. And I don't think I could ever get past the fact that Geraldine Carroll (and even the attempt to make the name sound a bit more pop star like) just sounds like a hairdressing salon for old women.

Same. I mean I liked 'Ain't No Man' at the time but once she released 'Don't be a Stranger' and all the basics in high school started writing the lyrics in their notepads and stuff I really just couldn't even.
 
Damn I played the shit out of the first album back in the day. Massively disappointed with the follow-up bar "Escaping" and her stunning version of "I Don't Want To Talk About It".
 
I've always been indifferent to this and only remember it when it turns up in Sunset Boulevard just before the end of the first Act. Dame Elaine did a lovely version of it, as did Glenn, but Patti Lupone rather overegged the pudding (of COURSE :D).

I sort of liked her first album, but it sounded thin at the time and positively emaciated now. I think Express was my favourite but I'm not inclined to revisit it and find out.

It must be that. The Lord ALW pimps it quite a lot around that time of year too.
