I’m quite excited for it, but I’ll have to get past whatever Emily Blunt has done to her face.
 
I should of course say that of course she's entitled to do whatever she likes to her face. It's entirely her own business. Good luck to her etc. I also think it's ok to say that as a viewer, I find it genuinely distracting when an actor or actress's face changes. Anyway, apparently she's incredible in the film, which doesn't surprise me. She's a bloody brilliant actress.
 
Also, as excited as I am to see the film, I'm concerned about those extremely dodgy CGI animals in the trailers.

I might pop to see this today. The reviews are all over the place and I suspect it's going to be pretty ropey, but I'd like to see for myself.
 
I’ve heard reports from various independent reviewers whom I usually trust, that this is “the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull of alien films”, and people will likely calm down and forget about it by next year.

I remember giving Ready Player One 10/10 when that first came out and now I can barely remember it.

Still, will watch this after prioritising a second watch of He-Man
 
I enjoyed this alot. Career best turns for Josh O'Connor and Coleman Domingo. It did drag a bit and the ending was quite silly but I was thoroughly entertained throughout.
 
I hated it. Zero thrills or tension. Clunky script. Massive plot holes. Incredibly flat visually too. Where has the magic gone? He hasn’t directed a truly great film for more than half of his career now. And sadly, Williams’ final score is pleasant but forgettable.
 
Yeah I didn’t really like this as much as I was hoping and it just seemed to get a bit too silly (and I enjoyed Project Hail Mary a lot!!). I’m surprised my screening wasn’t tittering by the end.

Also it could have done with a few laughs and the most thrilling part was the news station going coast-to-coast which says quite a lot. Most of the car chases looked to be about 30 mph

I felt exactly the same. The last half hour was deeply silly. I was chuckling inwardly and cringing a lot.

From Close Encounters of the Third Kind to this is the very definition of artistic decay.
 
It also feels very dated in the sense that I think if alien files were released by whistleblowers in today's world, they wouldn't be taken massively seriously.

I mean the Epstein Files that we actually have reveal people talking about eating children, yet what has happened? Nothing. No arrests and we're still going about our daily lives. The film feels very naive or something.

In fairness, wheeling out the creature at the end would be proof I guess, but I can't help but feel in 2026 the reaction wouldn't be the same as it was 30 years ago. The film seems to think that society is held together by religion. I mean is it? Really? I don't think so.
 
Yes we had the same discussion when we left that I think if those videos were released IRL there would scepticism that they were even real and just a lot of people not actually shitting themselves about it.

Maybe the movie should have been about that
 
My review is hmm.

Lots of set up. Not that much else. Emily is reliably great though.
 
Also, complete strangers just asked us if we were in there watching it - always a sogn of people wanting to make sense of what Exactly Was That.
 
This was really poor, but weirdly I didn't get bored despite the low quality and the run time. It moved along at a good pace. That said I'm unsure if I when I nodded off it was for one minute or twenty minutes, so that might have helped.

I agree with everyone's points re: the ending not playing out like that IRL

I keep remembering random bits in the film that just made absolutely no sense.

O'Connor standing in a field with the crop circle forming around him FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON AND IS NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN.

The fact that the scary, shady, deep state organisation didn't ever consider using even a single drone to find them.

The fact that this same terrifying, shadowy, dangerous organisation allowed them to just walk away from capture on more than one occasion. The second time they escape by Emily Blunt just saying nice things to each villain, while dozens of other villains stand around doing nothing.

The alien device that conveniently grants the holder the power to do whatever happens to be convenient to the plot at the time.

It's one of the DUMBEST films I've ever seen, but especially from a director of this calibre.
 
Again, having not yet seen it, found an interesting comment suggesting that if it was the exact same film, but with M Night Shyamalan’s name on it instead of Spielberg, it would have been critically mauled.

So true! The majority of critics really seem to be cutting him a LOT of slack. It's genuinely a really, really bad film, yet reviews are mainly kind.

I was thinking about this today after Richard Osman mentioned the run time. It really didn’t drag for me at all either which like you say is weird considering what you’re watching :D
 
I’m still confused about them having a living talking alien hanging around in a cold store but nah disclosure day is actually some videos of childlike aliens being buried. Like what?

Just have the alien doing the weather on Kansas news. That would have been a good watch.
 
Well I really enjoyed this. I thought Emily Blunt was terrific the whole way through. I was fully prepared for the silliness, but nobody does it quite like Spielberg :disco:

I think my main complaint, if it's a complaint, is that this would have made a much better mini series. There was a LOT of exposition and not a lot of big movie moments - the opening scene for example felt like the way Spielberg often opens his films, quietly midway through an event with no context, but then it just continued like an ongoing sequence of events, rather than resetting. That felt more like a TV series.

The last 20 minutes was brilliant I thought. The Newsroom meets The X Files.
 
I still don't get the hype around Colman Domingo though. He can deliver lines very eloquently, but he can't actually ACT!

  • I actually really liked the dynamic between Blunt and Wyatt Russell, so when she ditches him half way through and we only get to see him again in one scene at the end, it was a little annoying.

I was looking at Wyatt Russell thinking damn you are fine what have I seen you in and when I checked afterwards I was like - oh - nothing what so ever - it’s your dad I’m seeing in you.
 
All I could see with Wyatt Russell was JD Vance. He really looks like him, in a much better looking and not a human caricature kind of way
 
Thinking more about this.

What exactly do these aliens do when they get to Earth? They turn up and the government finds them and keeps it a secret. They have some magic stick that allows the holder to have telepathic powers and/or invisibility. Their actual purpose or presence on Earth is never explored at all. Or was I not paying attention?

I think their crashed technology was being reverse-engineered and they were being experimented on. I guess we were meant to feel sorry for them. Thing is, the aliens took two children and did very weird things to them, so they’re not exactly blameless either.

The film is riddled with gigantic plot holes though, so I wouldn’t think too much about it!
 
I don’t think the film was meant to be about the aliens. A lot of people around me when it finished were like “oh. Is that it?” (Including my mate) but it ended exactly how I expected it to.

It was very X Files. It was about the mystery and cover up around it. It was about how humans cope or don’t cope with such knowledge and the grey area around why people cover it up.

There were definitely plot holes. But I don’t know how you do this type of movie without an awful lot of guesswork.
