Doctor Who (2023-2025)

I'm so mad that they showed Susan last week, had all sorts of moments in this episode ("we're barren, I can't have a child, I don't want to do this alone", and MANY others) where it was almost telegraphed that she was coming back.... and then no fucking mention of her whatsoever! Come on, Carole Ann Ford is not getting any younger, do it before you're forced to make it a regenerated form.

Plus I felt that Ncuti was the one meant to meet her again. He was the one to get in touch with his emotions and to acknowledge his past. It needed him with tears in his eyes embracing his granddaughter. But nope.

He's not even met the Daleks!

Anyway

Other than that I'm just wondering if RTD is brooding. He seems very obsessed with babies lately.

I'm really not the target audience for this so I figured I didn't have a clue what was going on because of that but looking at responses online the hardcore fans were also none the wiser.

Great gig for Billie Piper though.

Oh my God! I didn’t even think of her the whole episode! How funny! She’s been teased for two full seasons, to the point where we’ve even now seen flashbacks…. But not a sniff of her in this episode 😂 Instead we get Kate, Mel, Ruby Sunday, Mama Sunday, Cherry Sunday, the Rani, a Rani, Shirley Anne Bingham, a girl from a random Christmas episode, a second reference to another girl from said random Christmas episode, a nonsensical reemergence of a talking baby from 2 seasons ago, Omega, handsome UNIT guy, Rose Mk II, Billie Fucking Piper.

It’s all just too fucking much.

I actually hated this episode so much. With Journey’s End it all felt so earnt and dramatic. This felt like a damp squib on every level.

Apparently Susan did film some scenes but they were cut after Ncuti quit.

WTAF??? Poor Carole Ann Ford if that’s true!!

So what happened with these rewrites? Was it very late that he notified them?

Preach it sister cwej. It made me realise how little I care for any of them. The Journey's End contrast popped into my head too.

Alongside Ruby, Anita from the Time Hotel was probs the only one I gave a shit about, and she was done dirty with the job of HOLDING OPEN A DOOR for an hour. And I don't think the "I just work in hospitality/a hotel" stuff landed as intended.

This being Belinda's ending really made me wish even more that we'd just had Ruby for two seasons. As a result, neither really made much of an impact. This was definitely the worst episode of RTD who for me. Even his duds before had more going for them.

Interesting to know how much of that is actually his and the show's fault, though, if Ncuti pulling out caused such chaos. It seems taken as read that the previous Doctors all had three series contracts, but I guess the Disney deal meant that wasn't possible here.

I think I'm team Ncuti on this. He obviously can't put his career on hold, it's pretty obvious that the original plan was for the next series to be in full production by now and yet we're still waiting to find out if Disney will continue to co-fund it (I'm assuming not).

I've accidentally corrupted my Twitter algorithm from nice wholesome gangbangs to Doctor Who content :(

Not ideal but I've enjoyed the below:

Thanks a lot Disney for spending ages umming and ahhing, costing us a good actor and probably a year or two hiatus. In the words of Peter Capaldi's other character, "come the fuck in or fuck the fuck off"

Gross to cut Susan's scenes out though. There had better be an explanation that the scene in some way completely relied on Ncuti staying on and she wasn't available to reshoot otherwise we were really robbed by that.

Anyway the more I think about this whole story the more confused I am, I thought the flashbacks of Belinda talking about Poppy were just bits I'd not paid attention to but no apparently this was just RTD trying to retcon a coherent story into place so he wouldn't have to make a baby disappear and just sort of gaslighting us in the process?

Bring on someone who can write a long playoff story coherently or just go back to bottled episodes imo.

According to the leaker who had previously revealed the details from the finale pretty much spot on

Allegedly shot in May 2024. The Doctor wins and everyone celebrates at a party where the Vlinx is the DJ. At least Ruby is there as well, some suggestions a bunch of UNIT people. The camera was going to pan up to reveal Susan watching from above and then into the end credits. Whilst baby Poppy would have gone back to her original reality timeline.

The original plan was for there to be a third Ncuti series, with Belinda as his assistant, which would have been about Susan, linking all the way back to Hartnell's Doctor, and trying to sort out the remaining timey-wimey leakages, Timeless Child, and "mavity" issues with the big bad being "The Boss".

However, as Disney wanted to do a wait and see before signing off the $$$ for a 3rd series taken up to the end of the agreed 26 episodes with the BBC, that meant filming could not begin (between August & December 2024 as originally planned, as Disney were more interested in filming The War Between the Land and the Sea spin off instead), so rather than leave Ncuti in limbo to miss out on potential acting roles, he decided to exit the role. Resulting in a hasty rewrite/edit, and in February 2025 filming his blue screen regeneration; with #13 cameo in the Tardis; and the Poppy is Belinda's baby retcon were all filmed.

Would it really have been so hard for them just to start the next series with Sylvester McCoy blacked up, he hits his head on the Tardis console and regenerates there and then?

It's been wild - and deserved - to see the internet unite in hate against it. That said, I'm not loving all the rage against RTD either. Even if his finales have sucked, his recent two series have been strong overall, and much better than the shitey Chibnall years.

Enjoying this re: Billie from Reddit, from a seemingly very accurate leaker:

The supposed original plot would have been decent as well, we'd only really be complaining about Omega and The Rani's quick end, and the setup to find Susan (who might even have planned to be the boss) would have been fun

I was expecting Poppy to stay the Doctor's kid and be Susan's mother based on what he said a bit ago about not having a granddaughter yet but things happening to him out of order - so I'm glad I'm not losing the plot so much as the plot lost itself.

On the other hand I'm glad it's not with Belinda. She's too new and too random. It'd be better to get River back in or perhaps Jenny.

This is a nice watch overall, and feels like being at Doctor Who's (2005-2025) wake:

Online fans currently quite confused/creeped out by RTD marking Doctor Who's 62nd anniversary with a video of some 27 year old he's friends with on the set of the TARDIS, swanning about like he's the Doctor

:eyes:

The second episode was marginally better but the writing is just so terrible :D

At least we got to see his arms

My BF's mum watched the first episode, has never watched Doctor Who, doesn't like sci-fi and has rung my BF to tell him she is 'HOOKED' after one episode..!

Nearly 3 million viewers, despite being on at the same time as the I'm A Celebrity final. That's more than any Doctor Who episode in the last 2 series.

Sunday night mid-winter slot straight after-Strictly? No surprise it's done a bit better that something going out in late Spring / early Summer with no big show lead-in

Brilliant news - though I was hoping there might be a bit more from the rumours the last month or two.

How I wished it would be The Power of the Daleks or something else from season 4/5.
