Doja Cat - Vie (new album)

I know she typically does sleeper hits but this seems bad. Hopefully Gorgeous takes off

I feel Gorgeous will take off but the numbers are horrible. hopefully the formats get her to 100k+ first week

The first half of this feels especially strong, I think the back end needs a bit more attention.

Agree that AAAHH MEN is a hoot and Stranger is glorious. Those gay lyrics though...

I haven't listened to this properly yet, but there seems to be some interesting production going on - I think she normally relies too heavily on samples and familiar hooks but I don't know if it's true here. I thought I heard some Shygirl-type future house sounds happening and that might work for me... feels like she had bigger singles last time to give her momentum though.

This is just quietly a cute little pop album. It's really a mix of 90/00s 'urban' with 80s production. Much of it is like a cross between 2000s Kanye and Rick James/Mary Jane Girls.

How the FUCK is nobody absolutely queening out over CARDS? The production is so fucking punchy.

"Stranger"chorus sounds like it could be Carly Rae or Mandy Moore singing. That's another stand out.

"Take Me Dancing" and "Silly! Fun!" are both very fun.
"Lipstain" sounds very Aaliyah :disco:
"Acts of Service" is very much the sound I've come to associate with her. I love how girly she can make rap sound.

I do agree that the first half is much stronger. There's definitely some filler in there.

there are a couple of fillers but the back is still sooo creamy and lush.

world tour

Ok, I HAVE to go see her. Vie is the kinda album that would be amazing on tour (in theory). And if her VMAs performance is any indicator then it will be amazing (in theory).

you know every single one of these songs will be AN EXPERIENCE on tour. the bass alone will shake my buss to the core.

On my second listen and this is starting to pop. Cards is incredible. Take Me Dancing is a bop.

Cards straight up SLAPS
I find it objectively good but I don't know how much I... enjoy it? it's such a weirdly low-key start to the album and the ominous feeling is quite random. I think the album really comes alive from Gorgeous onwards.

Acts of Service is my big grower today.

Would it mean that I found my person? When the language is acts of service?
Baby how do I know for certain? Does a key to your flat mean girlfriend?

she's a really superb lyricist, she always finds this balance between playful, nonsensical, funny and smart, and often I find her lyrics kinda pass you at first by because her delivery is so sweet. but I keep noticing new details and finding things to enjoy on each track every time I dive in.

Stranger is a ridiculously brilliant pop song. the hooks are bulletproof, the rap is iconic (if he like dick I'd still like him!), the sax solo is like a big warm hug. I just wish it wasn't so homophobically SHORT!

top 5
01 Stranger
02 Acts of Service
03 Couples Therapy
04 Take Me Dancing
05 Gorgeous

Say So surprisingly is not in her top 10 on spotify and hasn't been for a while. I'm here for WOMAN being recast as her signature hit :disco:

Say So is still top tier for me and one of the best songs post-2000.

This has fallen off the Billboard 200 after five weeks. Scarlet, for comparison, was on the chart for one year. Planet Her is still charting.

Such a shame as the album is fantastic.

Not sure where she goes next, maybe a re-release with a new single going back to her ‘classic’ sound in the hope to get a hit.

I really think she shot herself in the foot when she was going on and on about how she’s not a pop music artist then tried to slide back in with this.

I wonder if that Ray-Ban Meta ad made her some cash because it’s on constantly

she can’t really sell or stream albums off her name alone, unlike some of the other pop girls. Jealous Type never took off, despite a fair bit of promo.

I'm pretty sure she's featured on the upcoming Midnight Sun Remix with Zara, released on Thursday (not that it'll do anything), but at least she's active :disco:
this was Munu Long. as if it would be Doja Cat hopping on a Zara Larsson track in 2025!!!

She absolutely crashed and burned at the Rock n Roll hall of fame during the OutKast tribute. Looked completely out of her depth. Was painful to watch.
