Dolly Parton DEAD (8 Viewers)

God I hate the streaming era particularly following the death of musical icons.

I Will Always Love You is the best song of all time, and yes, Whitney bossed it, but Dolly WROTE IT FFS
That's not to say Dolly's delivery isn't fantastic because it so is.

Would actually love this to become her "Man in the Mirror" over 9 to 5 (it won't)

Trump is lowering the flags across the US for a week.

Maybe she will unite America.

Jolene and Islands in the Stream were her only top 10s in the UK.

9 to 5 was a no.47 flop.

None of her albums did especially well either - no.1s and only 156 weeks in total on the album chart.

I have always found it it inexplicable.

Obviously all those songs have a far more impressive legacy than chart positions let on. Even STILL!

It’s kinda outrageous how the country legends were ignored in the UK for the longest time, especially when all the big crooners - who regularly appropriated country music - sold gazillions.

TOTP did a one hit wonder special a few months ago (I think it’s on iPlayer) and Willie Nelson was on it. I was gagged.

This is wild. I feel like I know my chart stats but this has shocked me. Campaign for 9 to the 5 to the top now please!

And it's even worse for female country stars in the UK, particularly in the album chart. Or indeed female stars at all before the 1980s when it started getting better.

Yet Tammy Wynette had a no.1 (not coming for dear ole Tammy and her ice cream van).

Like me, she was universally loved and I’m genuinely gutted :(

I remember as a 13 year old buying her double CD Greatest Hits album with my pocket money and enthusiastically bringing it back to the car only for my mother to turn around and ask me if I was a homosexual :o I of course denied it but had to sit there during Coat of Many Colours like :shy:

I mean if anyone was going to make him not be an arsehole for a second it was her. Maybe he should take a deeper look at her values and reflect.

I’m still not ok about O’Hara - she was just getting started - she was not done yet.
Don't.

The night she died, I was with my husband and sister-in-law and she had never heard of her. I said we were feeling like she'll be feeling when Dolly goes :(

I’m sure there are worse ways to be outed than a Dolly compilation :disco:

Smokey Mountain Memories really is an astonishing piece of music.

I'm throwing together a Dolly top 20 in my head but it's really a complete scatter gun of absolute classics I haven't heard in age. Really looking forward to delving in properly in the next few days.

But while I'm here, shall we? :disco:

Dolly was such a beautiful person to the world, even through her suffering and hardships she brought a smile and words and tunes to so many. ♡ I also admire her speaking about her experience with endometriosis so many years ago. 🥲

Post #80, like her years, though with her genuine kindness and determination she will live on for so many more 😌🎶💗🌠
