Dolly Parton DEAD (5 Viewers)

I have a friend and colleague who is 50 years old and she was born and grew up in Angola. She has so few cultural references of anything from the 80s and 90s, but says that in the 80s she did watch Dolly Parton’s variety show, and was the first western white celebrity she even knew of!

Just listening on Spotify the last couple of days, I've realised how ridiculously prolific she was. I considered myself reasonably aware of her work, but I clearly only knew the tip of the iceberg.

I've also largely just been playing compilations or the This Is Dolly playlist. I think i want to go into individual studio albums.

She really never stopped. From her debut in 1967 through to her last album in 2023, she never seems to have gone more than 3 years without releasing a new studio album. Often one or more per year.

I don't feel qualified to give an expert opinion either, but if there's a period of her studio albums I would recommend, it would be her Bluegrass period from 1998 to 2002.

Little Sparrow in particular is a wonderful album.

I think The Grass Is Blue (the one before Little Sparrow) was the first album of hers I listened to contemporaneously, as someone I worked with was a huge fan, and we liked to indulge each other's musical taste occasionally.

Same for me with Little Sparrow. I remember her promoting it fairly heavily here at the time - Parkinson, Norton etc. So I ended up picking it up and falling in love with it.

On a more lowbrow note, I'm re-watching this and cackling. Every frame is somehow iconic. Easily in my all-time Drag Race lip syncs.

Nothing against Alexis and her poor shattered pelvis after this performance, but Farrah clearly should have won.

Currently listening (for I believe the first time) to her 1984 album of covers, 'The Great Pretender'. Very mid 80s production, it's a pretty faithful bunch of covers largely, but her ad libbing is wonderful.

Hungry Again is a good Dolly album. I only have that and Run Rose Run as studio albums, but I might buy Little Sparrow if that is meant to be one of her best ones.

Looking at the UK streaming numbers Jolene will probably go top 30 today. I absolutely expect them all to climb significantly next week.
