I don’t think her star is falling and she’s still very bankable. It’s just a bit of a shame that she hasn’t managed to maintain that stance over to this album. It’s full of bops, it’s a hit, she’s done well. But it’s just not very interesting!

You could argue that a lot of the songs on FN were practically fully formed before they got to Dua (it's been well documented that they were pitched to her), whereas she has had a greater degree of involvement on Radical Optimism and that perhaps explains the critical difference between the two albums.

See I heard (and it’s all speculation so I have no idea what is true) that she actually had planned to have greater involvement in this album but when the label got wind of her idea to make an album of pop-with-90s-alternative-influences, they took over, found her more pop stuff to try out, and then ended up choosing the stuff they picked over the stuff she wanted to do. And so it ended up being a diluted mish mash, which tracks with her previous comments, tracks with the final product and tracks with whatever speculation is going on about ‘crisis talks’ re the deluxe and next album

It all sounds a bit DRAMATIC in context but she will be one the label’s biggest revenue streams and they do take it seriously. But it also means they often overthink these artists and the meddling sometimes makes things worse.

We may never know what Dua does Massive Attack would have sounded like …

I mean the COUNTRY THING appears to be a hot trend… I don’t think it’s going anywhere fast.

I’ve always found Dua to have a heavy voice, for a pop singer anyway (and it’s not a critique, I love a thicc low female voice). Country might suit her well.
 
I wish she would go back to having a couple of tracks found on her debut (the first version anyway, not the following versions featuring ready-made hits) that showcased that low tone, she sounded exquisite even though they obviously never meant to be singles!

It's a really good vocal performance and I actually really like the song, they sound strangely good together.

I'd love a studio version.
