Dan Stevens’ character, Alexander Lemtov was inspired by Philipp Kirkorov. So old Kirko already bragged about it on Insta and invited Stevens to join the Dream Team in ESC 2021. :disco: I assume his Russian version of Lion Of Love will be released at some point then...

Would it be too obvious to do a Lemtov/Fire Saga interval act at Rotterdam next year? Because I'd be VERY here for it.

That would be great, but if the Dutch are still in charge I fear they'll be doing far too much earnest shit about togetherness to remember to have any FUN.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there had been something to that effect planned for this year (I heard something about Will Ferrell giving Iceland’s points maybe) but the moment will probably have passed by then.

Oh that's probably true, especially if they originally planned to release the film in May as I'm sure I read somewhere :(
 
Also it really amused me that G:Son was "commissioned" to write a song for the film and he blatantly just reached into his Melodifestivalen bottom drawer for something that's been sitting there since 2006.

I fear the same. I can live with us sending all those MOR entries. It works. But I really hope we bring something different for the actual contest.
 
I'm inclined to sympathise a bit more with the Dutch broadcasters after hearing in an interview that they had to start planning and filming for Shine A Light in late March, when they didn't have a clue what the world would look like by May. It could have all got a lot worse.

It was still a rubbish show, but I can sort of understand it being so tonally off now, and would be fairly confident we'll get something fun from them next year.

I liked that the Greek woman and Russian guy (Sorry, I can’t remember names) weren’t stereotypical bad villains...
 
I love at the end of Husavik when they’re talking and she says she’s not seen him with a real tan and he purrs “Ooooh *pouty kiss*”. Just the way he delivers it gets me every time.
 
Okay so I'm halfway through this, and it's sort of okay. Very affectionate towards the contest, which is good, but not funny at all (up until Dan Stevens turned up, at least).

Some holes in the story are annoying me, mind. If everyone hates the UK and we're destined for nul points, why is it being hosted in Edinburgh? It's established earlier in the film that the winner always hosts, and if the UK is hosting on behalf of another country it undermines the whole plot point about winning bankrupting Iceland.

I don't like that I'm thinking too much during a fucking Will Ferrell film.
 
I said it before but I reckon they're either hosting on behalf of Australia, OR... Edinburgh isn't in the UK in the universe this film is set in, if you know what I'm saying :scotland:

There've been a few references to him being paid basically fuck all - I think the fact that his boss is Mr Burns accounts for the lower salary. Seriously, he spends over a grand on novelty currency at Itchy and Scratchy Land, and to this day I hate that scene because I've no idea how he affords it.

I also thought that Ulrika Johnson pulled some strings.

I didn't know Rachel McAdams had that husky voice in her. If I didn't know any better (and I don't), I'd say she was dubbed by Lindsay and Dinah Lohan.

The Glee-lite Ray of Believe was genuinely special. Only lacking Dana International and Gina G for me. And perhaps Shereen Nanjiani or her ginger rival or Michelle McManis could have been cast as actual Scottish presenters.

Very good. I think it was around the whales and Demi Lavato's arm that I decided this could be something more than just decent.

A Sylvia Night unofficial sequel please. Imagine..
 
You know what this really needs? Just one or two moments or quotable scenes that are iconic in their own right. I can see this living on with singalong screenings and the likes around Eurovision time, and it could just use a few more "moments" to help give it that proper culty feel.

I thought that too and figured it was a decision to facilitate the plot and Lars' flights from Edinburgh to Reykjavik and then back to Edinburgh in the 48 hours/weekend while still keeping it Anglo/English in the same way Oslo or Stockholm wouldn't be able to.

Though I figure the film marker's number one concern probably was not realism and a flight to London is only another extra hour :(
 
They remixed Edinburgh beautifully.

More of a lucky Tracy Young remix than a proper tits o'clock poppers affair, but a fun tarting up nonetheless.
 
What everyone else said really. This was baggy, over-long and predictably broad but surprisingly affectionate and some of the tunes were proper bangers. :D

Will’s character was by far the worst thing in it.
